[Z06] Header / cam dyno results
OK...little back ground, I own a 2002 Black Z06. Bought it new, but have only recently gotten the bug to do some mods. This car has never been a daily driver, My BEAST stays under cover in my garage and I bring her out every weekend look for Mustangs, Porches and Vipers to harass.
Well I just got her back from Williams Performance in Mooresville NC (just North of Charlotte). I had Kooks LT headers with cats, a LG G5X3 Cam with 112 lobe, and a Halltech Venom intake installed. I know I could have done the Halltech easily myself, but since Bob and Nick were already removing the twin chrome air intake I already had in the car to install the cam, it made sense. they werent charging me anything to do this.
Also I have BB Bullets on the car. But I also have dynamat extreme and the dynamat pad in the rear, so the interior noise is minimal.
I replaced the stock shifter this weekend with the new MGW shifter.
RESULTS:
The car dynoed at 420 RW HP and 400 ft/lbs torque. I am extremely pleased! She still has street manners but when you step on it she is wild!
Opinion on Mods:
#1) G5X3: Love it! Great race idle, very, very little surge.
#2) Kooks Headers: 2 1/2" catted, 1 7/8 primaries. What a difference they make compared to the stock manifolds. It was really a toss up between the LG Pros and the Kooks for me. The LG's, from the test I have seen, do have more low end torque. I'm sure I would have loved them also, but I just couldnt see the extra money. I'm happy with the Kooks. Iwent with the 1 7/8" because I plan on either putting AFR 205 heads on next, or PP my LS6 heads. I need to do more research on this.
#3) Halltech Venom: Works great, looks great. I have read on the forum about the Venom hitting the hood liner in some cases. I did not have this issue.
#4) MGW Shifter: No mistake here, this is an excellent investment also. Nice crisp shifts. Looks great in the car also.
#5) BB Bullets: I had a drone at around 2,500 rpm BEFORE I installed the headers. That is why I installed the Dynamat, which did help, but did not cure it. Now that I have the headers on, I hear NO drone whatsoever. The cabin is actually quieter with the headers on. I like the BB Bullets.. they really give the car a deep exhaust note, as well as significantly increasing the hp and torque due to no restrictions.
KUDO's:
Bob and Nick at Williams Performance: Excellent work Guys!
I hope this helps you guys that are considering different mods.

I recently had a cam swap done as well on my weekend car. Even living in Chicago with the crap weather the car has seen the road more then ever with the new cam in it. My guess is you will now drive the car more which is always a good thing.

Have a great time, and dont embarass too many high dollar imports! Leave some for us!

Most cams that I have seen will advertise a hp but tell you that headers are required to see maximum gain. In another words if you want 60 hp you have to also have headers on. So the 60 hp is inclusive of the gains from the headers.
Im not a engine guru by any means, but I imagine there are cams out there that would give you an additional 60 rwhp on top of your current 390, for a total of 450 rwhp...probably a real big cam with bad street manners. I wasnt looking to lose low end torque and driveability for a huge top end that I would never use. I dont drag race my car at the strip, so I probably will never see North of 110 MPH.
The Cam I am running is an LG G5X3 which I believe is somewhere around a 240/241. I am running with cats (we have emissions test every year here in NC
) which doesnt help. I also am running 1 7/8" primaries. I intend on putting AFR Heads on next, and from what I can tell, the heads will work well with the 1 7/8"..guess I will find out.The LG website has some good dyno results to compare against. There is one test with an 02 with LG Pros, G5X3 and Bullets that puts down 426.2 (see file 23/111 on there website). There is another one though that puts down 437.5 (file 58/111) with similar set up but doesnt tell you the exhaust system used.
My guess is that test 23/111 has cats and that 58/111 doesnt. But who knows...
Good Luck with whatever you choose!
Kevin
