There really is something to that old credo, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" I mean, how could they have created an oil that is so much better than what is already out there?
In the snowmobile world, there was this new oil called, are you ready, Blue Marble. Sounds like Royal Purple, right? There must be some market research done that says, if you put a color into a name and add another catchy name to add to it, you can get a lot of people to swear by your oil, and if it is dyed, well, you can take it to the bank. Blue Marble.
I'll admit, I put the Royal Purple in my differential because it already has the friction modifier in it AND it is a full synthetic oil, but I did not do it because of any advertising claims and the oil was not much more than Mobil 1. So far, no issues. But no way was I going to spend the money they wanted for a quart of their motor oil. It is lies in advertising like this that would and will turn me off to the oil forever. I will not use any of their products again in light of their deceptive advertising.
Then again, I'd have to confirm that the BP article is real and not made up on the internet. Along the same lines that just because it is on the internet does not mean it is real. And, why bother reading what I typed here? I'm a hypocrite, I really am.
Meh... it's just semantics. They may have been a little overzealous in their advertising, but no worse, IMO, than Mobil 1's Group IV basestock claims. I still think RP has solid products, and I'm currently running them in my transmission and differential - still run Mobil 1 in the engine.
On a purely subjective note, my transmission shifts smoother with RP Synchromax than it did with the 2 month old Mobil 1 ATF that I drained out of it.
The cold hard facts include thousands upon thousands of vehicles using Mobil 1 over the years that have accumulated more than 150,000 miles on their engines. This is proof enough for me that Mobil 1 works. In fact, lowly non-synthetic-infused engines rack up 300,000 miles on a regular basis. You really can't go wrong with almost any SAE-approved oil (of proper viscosity) nowadays.
there ya go
at least RP can still advertise it as oil.......... and it's purple
Am I taking what I need to from the article? I glanced over it pretty quickly. From what I gather RP is just having to change their claims because the information they received from independent testing is not enough to substantiate their advertisements but, on the same hand is STILL a synthetic oil that meets the requirements to be used in an LS1. Did I miss something else?

Anecdotal evidence strikes again! So I guess if Bob and Sue did it for years and their car didn't grind to an absolute halt this oil must be the best oil ever!
You have no idea about this topic because you haven't ever researched it. If you ever decide to do some proper reading and actually LEARN SOMETHING, you will see that there are far superior products to be used. Perpetuating the belief that Mobil 1 is the be all, end all of oils is misleading to those who are like you. Too lazy to do the research and therefore will forever be ignorant of the reality which is modern engine oils.
This kind of group think mentality that takes place on this forum makes me sick. Wake up people. It's a big internet with tons of useful information on a variety of topics. Bobistheoilguy is a great place to start.

I continue to find out that the old sayings never dye. Gimmicks don't work. And until someone shows me data with numerous (like 30-40) dyno pulls with the same car and the same dyno showing RP increases HP, i will continue to use M-1 as long as I have any performance car.
And please no comments about the testing parameters. I just blurted that out to make my point. use your own head for the details.
So let me get this straight, now that RP is now just ordinary synthetic oil as Mobil1, Mobile1 is all of a sudden better? I'll admit I was dissapointed in their claims too, however, that just brings it down to the ordinary level of syn oils. Or maybe I am still missing where M1 is actually better.

I would not go as far to say Mobil 1 is a better oil. RP is good stuff. Just way over priced . My .02

I'm not saying it's better either but, from the responses here that seems to be what everyone is agreeing on. It's not too much more than M1, maybe a few cents.

A few cents? In my neck of the woods, RP is considerably more. Then again, everything around here is considerably more

Maybe buying from a company that's honest is enough to make one product better.
Who knows what else they could be hiding from us. They're willing to fabricate an awful lot just to sell their product, the rabbit hole could be deeper.
