Use what makes you happy,,don't knock others choices!! As they say "Your money,,Your car"!! I have a friend that bought a 97 GMC Sonma new,,,and has 587,xxx miles on the original unopened motor and drive train. It's never had synthetic in it!! Pay your money and enjoy!!
But considering the fact that they've changed the formula of Mobil 1 (and all brands of motor oil in fact) many many times over the past 30 years, how do you know that you'll get the same results from the latest formulation that you got from the previous ones? You're assuming that because it was a great oil in the past that it's still a great oil today. It's still a good oil, but from oil analysis results I've seen lately, I wouldn't exactly call it a great oil, there are many others out there that are better.
Believe me, there are so many other things that can and will accelerate engine wear. Let's look at air filters, for example. My nephew used a Fram in his Integra for almost 300,000 miles. Many filter afficianados will swear up and down that Fram filters are horrible for your engine. The fact remains that while you can be extremely fussy about how low a micron rating a filter should have, Fram filters will allow your engine to outlast your ownership life. Why go nutso over this aspect of your car? My brother in-law went to Jiffy lube to have his oil changed every 6 months. When he sold his van it had over 300,000 miles on it. Was he unique in his oil or air filter preference? Not by a long shot and yet his van was still passing CA's strict smog laws when the van was sold.
This is why I am not going to try to convince anyone to use the latest and greatest oil according to Bob. Mobile 1 may have changed their formula, but it still meets the SAE specs and Mobils stringent test requirements. That's good enough for me.
That was not the point of what I was trying to say. The article did these test on the RP oil to try and scale the performance improvement. Then they try and call RP out for all of testimonials and claims. All of those claims stated you had to make the complete switch for the performance improvements, which they obviously only changed the engine oil.

Keep in mind that the "article" doesn't make any claims, but just reports what the "advertising oversight council" ruled after they received a complaint from another oil manufacturer and test reports from an independent (and highly respected) lab that were provided.
Minor update.. around 12/08 or 1/09, Valvoline Synpower was granted the GM 4718M approval in 5W-30 and 10W-30 grades. It should be listed on the bottles by now.
Thanks. That makes 12 oils that have provided GM with PROOF that they meet the spec and are fine to use in a Vette.
I just don't understand people who go off and use some other oil that only the manufacturer/marketer claims to be good to use in a Vette.

Guess I shouldn't switch to the new Castrol Edge since they claim an 8% wear reduction over Mobil 1? I already use Syntech but the Jimmys Dipstick advertising has made me think I should try the new Edge. Now I have to doubt all advertising?
RP in my tranny and my diff. Both showed positive results. Smoother shifting and quieter gear noise. Many pro race teams are sold on RP motor oils but I've read complaints about bearing failures with RP oil so I couldn't do it.
BTW in Alex's RP thread I tossed out a tidbit from my local Walmart. On the RP oil shelf they have a sign stating that RP is not for use in 2004 and newer vehicles. I'm not sure why and still haven't found anything on the net to back that up.

Am I taking what I need to from the article? I glanced over it pretty quickly. From what I gather RP is just having to change their claims because the information they received from independent testing is not enough to substantiate their advertisements but, on the same hand is STILL a synthetic oil that meets the requirements to be used in an LS1. Did I miss something else?

That's about what I gathered from the article too.
I don't feel that it's cause enough, for RP users, to run right out and drain all RP lubricants from their cars.
I think a lot of people are missing the major point. People are not going to go out and drain ther tanks and switch from RP becuase it is SOOOO much worse then M-1. They are switching becuase RP made false claims to drum up business. Flat out...THEY LIED. The reason I never switched was becuase there wasn't substantial data showing the increase.
a fuzzy little foreigner going around assaulting men (notice the lack of female assaultees) with a dipstick certainly makes me want to use that brand of motor oil
I would like to see the test results for Shamwow and some of the other products sold on TV by the yelling sales people. Very interesting article. Thanks for posting.
You'd be surprised. Shamwow actually does as advertised. I have a bundled stock of it.
Since mobil 1 is recommeded, that's what I'll continue to use
There's that MISCONCEPTION again. MOBILE1 is NOT RECOMMENDED!!!
The oil cap says "Factory Filled w/Mobile 1". Show me in the owner's manual where it says "Mobile1 is RECOMMENDED" Show me!
