Default Castrol 10w60?

Hey guys im a bmw tech by day and a vette nut by night. I get castrol
10w60 from work for free because we run it in our M cars. Would it
be a bad idea to run this oil in my z06 because its such a heavy weight?

Stock clearances => stock oil.

If you have modified your engine heavily, you might need a heavier oil, but if it is stock it will be of little additional benefit and rob you of some HP. After 7 years of tracking my '01 Z06 with 30 - 40 HPD days per season and 40K miles on it, I dropped a crate LS6 in it and am in the process of doing a refresh on the original motor (heh heh, well, that and a few minor mods!). After tear-down, the engine was spotless aside from some minor scoring in one cylinder, which honed out nicely, and I have only ever run 5W30 or 10W30 Mobil.

Free Oil is not worth a motor. That oil is way too thick for the stock engines. As with other posts above all I have ever run is M1 in 5-30 and have 4 years of heavy track duty on the car. Change stock weight when the use indicator gets to 50% and you will be fine.

Years ago I had a Z28 which I thought would be a good idea to run 20w-50 oil in. It actually raised the engine temp by running too heavy an oil, considerably higher than you would think. Changed back to stock weight and the temp came back down.

10-30W is put in your car for mileage reasons, not performance. Bob Bondurant's driving school switched to 15-50W for their stock Vettes as they were blowing motors too much with the 10-30W. 10-30W is way to thin for the track when your motor gets real hot so it really depends on how you drive. In Europe the C5 Vettes come with 5-40W, not 10-30W.

good point worth mentioning.
the thicker the oil, the slower it flows, the longer it stay in one location, the hotter it will get, the faster it will break down.

Factory may say 5-30 on the oil cap but the manual also says 10-30 is OK. In the summer I use 10-30 and I use 7 1/2-30 in the winter. Mobil One says it is fine to mix half 5-30 with half 10-30.

I had a conversation with an engineer from a well known performance oil company. He told me that high performance LS-series will do just fine on 5w-30 oil. I never even heard of 10w-60. I definetely wouldn't use it in my cars.

The Castrol 10w60 is approved by ZF for use in the C4 ZF transmission. Pretty common there.

I wouldn't use it in the engine. GM designed the engine for 30 weight oil so I think it would be risky to use anything else.
