The short version of the history I've read is they were originally used to be able to differentiate between cars on the track one, two or three hashmarks for different cars and drivers. I'm not positive about that though:o

The short story is that the stripes denote VERY special versions of the Corvette.
IMO, if my 'Vette dosen't have the qualifications for the "Hash Marks", I don't put them on.

And that my Corvette Brothers is Corvette lore and that's why they're on my car! That and the fact that I like them on there and it's "MY CAR"! All of this bleeding heart crap about what belongs on a Corvette and what doesn't is just a matter of personal likes and dislikes, nothing more!
