The short version of the history I've read is they were originally used to be able to differentiate between cars on the track one, two or three hashmarks for different cars and drivers. I'm not positive about that though:o
It's called a GS, or Grand Sport, stripe or a hash mark. They used duct tape at first to tell the corvettes apart on races? The 90's ZR-1 have them too.

No they didnt. If you saw a C4 ZR1 with them on there then the owner put them on.
To the OP, here is your answer.
Q: What is the significance of the the red hashmarks on the front left fender of the Grand Sports?
A: During some races of the original 1963 Grand Sports, the teams placed strips of tape (rumor says duct tape) on the fenders instead of numbers to identify the cars.

And that my Corvette Brothers is Corvette lore and that's why they're on my car! That and the fact that I like them on there and it's "MY CAR"! All of this bleeding heart crap about what belongs on a Corvette and what doesn't is just a matter of personal likes and dislikes, nothing more!
