Dont take this the wrong way but why arent they being built anymore!? They obviously werent that great if they only lasted three years. Now besides that, I actually like the GTO, old and new. I would love to have one but I hate the fact that my 540hp C5 gets better gas mileage than a stock GTO. Ive driven several new GTO's and they felt just like my '02 Camaro SS that I had and a C5 has the edge in a drag race stock for stock and both being manuals. Automatics could be a different story.
To the OP, go test drive both and see which one you like the best. If it were me, Id try to find a low mileage C5 for around the same price. They are out there, you just have to look for them.
It was only planned to be a 3 year production, end to end.

That was the plan but if they would of sold them like they had planned then Im sure they would of continued to make them for at least another couple of years. Your not going to stop production of a car if your selling a butt load of them, your only going to stop if you dont meet you goals, which they didnt.

You know, the Vette fell woefully short of expectations its first 3 years as well....
Sometimes bad marketing, or not getting it right when first released, can kill a pretty good car. Subject to debate, but I think the Corvair and Fiero fell into that category. By the time they got them "right" it was too late. I'm sure there are other examples...

I agree that the C1 in the beginning didnt do all that great but your comparing a first generation Corvette to a third generation GTO. If the GTO was coming out for the first time in 2004, as a first generation, then yea I wouldnt of made that statemnt but it had already had two previous generations so it had its follwoing already. Honestly I wish GM would of continued to build the GTO and get rid of the G8.

Well, considering that your average person STILL doesn't know what a GTO is, let alone what it was, it's basically the same as starting over. We enthusiasts account for such a small percentage of actual car buyers, it's ridiculous. And GM/Pontiac's frail attempts at advertising didn't help either. I didn't like them at all until I went for a ride in a new one back in '04. 3 years later (after a tour overseas) I came back and my first order of business was to get one.
Let me also say that if you've actually taken a spin in one and didn't like it, that's one thing. But if you're trashing the car based off what car & driver says or based on how it looks, you're doing yourself a great disservice. What the GTO is now is basically the quasi-family friendly Vette. Or for those who want a little more cushion than what the Vette offers.

Reason: Trying to keep somewhat on target here...

Oh, and you're sooo right about the Fiero! Way ahead of it's time here in America. Too bad they goofed that up...
And for the 4th edit! It's odd that Pontiac is kinda like the middle quality car now. I just wish they'd can the G5/6, those things are ugly and cheap... The G8 is a very nice car, but not the barnstormer it was supposed to be. It's like a budget Caddy IMO.
You might want to go back and read my posts. I never trashed the GTO and I dont go by what magazines say, I go by my personal experiences. I have driven several and do like them as I have already stated. Only part that I might of trashed was that the GTO gets worse gas mileage than my C5. If it werent for that fact, Id definitely get one. Of course after seeing all these other "econo" cars that have about the same gas mileage as my Vette is pretty bad too. Some of the things I loved about driving the GTO was the factory exhaust sound and the muscle car feel.
Lets see, you're calling me names like a little boy & I'm the ignorant one?
You still don't have anything to do? How about you go drop $1,600 on some more headers so you can make yourself feel better. I'll send you $5.00 to your paypal to get ya started.

I wasn't directing that last part towards you.
What kinda mileage are you getting? I drive 100% city and average in the neighborhood of 18mpg, and I drive like an idiot occasionally. I was getting 35 highway out of it... I've only got a bolt-ons LS2 though, so...
