These wheels came with a rubber gasket. I called my local dealer as well as Gene, and neither of them can find the rubber gasket in their parts catalogs. What gives? Any idea where I can get them?
Are they tubeless wheels? Some mags were not. I don't know what exactly you're talking about as far as a gasket goes. Do you mean a "rim liner"? That would be a tube protector, maybe.
this gasket goes around the back side of the wheel and covers the edge of the mounting surface to the rotor. It is meant to limit wheel corrosion on magnesium wheels.
I called up bob at house of wheels. He had a used one for $30 shipped. Also found one on Ebay. Called 2 dealers and neither could find a part number for it. Hard to believe GM does not carry this part, but one of the dealers actually called someone and confirmed GM does not carry it.
Just a thought; but if its a round gasket or O-ring, perhaps remove one of them, and bring it to a good auto store and see if they have something of the same diameter that would seal the hole. If you can find something that might do the trick, you could replace all five on one wheel to maintain balance.
Goes on back of center hub outside the bolt circle...to minimize dissimilar metal cathodic corrosion between magnesium wheel hub and steel rotor due to presence of salt/water.
Pressed inserts for lugs are aluminum with some rubber insert there for each as well.
Have a close look at a set of these sometime at a swap meet. They really are truly something special. Made by Speedline from Italy (same folks that make the Z wheels now). Corvette Quarterly did an article on the C5 mags several years ago entitled "Fancy Italian Footwear" I recall, explaining some of this.
I had a set on my Pewter 2002 (one of like 114 sold that year w/ RPO N73), and had a nice used set for my black 2,000 C5. Slick combos.
