Well just wanted to say thank you to all you guys and especially rocco for his write up on how to overhaul your air conditioning system.
A few weeks ago my A/C compressor was making some nasty grinding noises when I turned on the A/C, granted it was still blowing cold air, I had no doubt it would fail all together soon.
We have a $5,000 snap on A/C service cart at work. Friend of mine recovered 1.77 LBS of R-134A from the factory fill with 5.5 ounces of oil.
After that I tore into the system, new compressor, new orfice, new air dryer for $230 shipped with new o-rings, put it all back together, put it on a vaccuum for a few hours. and put the 1.75 ounces of R-134 back in that it calls for. The compressor came to me filled with 4 ounces already so all I had to do is push 5.5 ounces back in when we charged the system after it was on a vaccuum for a while. The car now blows extremely cold air and no more noisy compressor.
All together, parts, watter pump gaskets, compressor oil and Dex cool costed me $280.. The stealer ship out of curiousity when I caled for a repair estimate wanted $1,500..
Thank you again C/F for saving me a ton of money

I just went by roccos directions. It makes it much easier to pull the water pump. Its only six 10MM bolts and 2 new gaskets.
I wanted to use GM Dex cool to make sure I atleast put he right stuff back in. If you get coolant on your belts when you take the water pump off, they will squeak for a few days. Next time I will remove the belts from the vehicle take them all the way out
Before you charge it, check the pressure. Its only suppose to be at 1.75 LBS of 134
Guys A/C on this car is very easy once you get the stuff off you need to in order to do the job. If you need me to post hat magic link on how to do every thing yourself from scratch, let me know. I have to turn the fan down after a few minutes or it will freeze me out.
It could just mean that your system is low on refrigerant and the low pressure switch is shutting down the compressor to keep it from being damaged.
When you say the A/C just turns off, do you mean the fan, the compressor, or the whole system?
Thats what I was thinking.
And I never hear the compressor turn on. It blows regular fan air. When I said "turns off" I meant the a/c light will come on for a few seconds and then turn off.
Could the Air Temperature sensor be bad??? If it thinks the car has reached the correct temp then it would shut it off. Just an idea and I know those sensors are pretty cheap. There is one out in front of the car near passenger side foglight and one next to ignition key.

Yuo should be able to tell the difference based on fan speed. If the sensor was bad and showing the interior to be cool, the climate control would slow the fan down to a near stop. If the sensor is good and the AC is not making cold, the fan should remain at high speed as the climate control continues to attempt to cool the interior down.
