Default Road Noise

Yesterday I got to drive my 98 Convertible for the first time since buying it in Jan - first I drove about 5 miles with the top down it was a great feeling even though it is still cold out. When I put the top up I could hear a lot of road noise. I know it is a convertible and it is going to have road noise.

Last year I drove my 96 convertible (sold it in Jan for the 98) on a road run with the corvette club. My 96 was very loud (road noise) with the top up that it was very hard to even hear yourself think. With the top down it wasn't so bad. There were a few C5 convertibles on that road run. I asked the guys with the C5 convertibles if they had lots of road noise and they said they didn't hardly have any.

I was wondering if I was just lucky to have one that is loud? Or maybe to them it's not loud. Is there a way to pad the car to keep the road noise down? Do you have lots of road noise in your C5 convertible?

It seem the convertible is more quiet with the top down then up.

I know in the coupes it is pretty quiet.

Tire noise from the RF's constitutes most of the noise. I made the switch to non RF's and it made a world of difference.

Now, don't get me wrong, these things are not Lexus' so there is some noise, but afterall, it is a sports car.

Now you know why they put that advance curve on the radio volume control....My Vert is noisy, but not annoyingly so. I don't have the run flats and that has helped. I can carry on a conversation with a passenger very easily. You have to remember, you have a lot of tire surface on the road and you are picking up that sound. Also if you have a 6 speed, you are getting tranny whine (sounds like marbles). All normal. It's a sports car and reduced weight means reduced insulation and sound deadening. I would also say that mine is quieter with the top down (which is today for the first time this year at 75 degrees), except for the wind noise. A good loud exhaust will drown out the other noises...

Stuff fiberglass house insulation into plastic garbage bags and stuff these into the three rear compartments. These collect a lot of road noise and amplfy (sp?) it.
