I have heard that 3.42's really wake up an automatic. My question is if this is the case why is it that Chevrolet never had/have it as an option? Is it mechanically or just by choice?
Actually, I went from 2.73s to 3.42s and the fuel milage didn't change that much. I went from 30 mpg highway to about 28 mpg highway. I also went from an anemic 13.30 in the quarter to a respectable 12.90!
I'll take the 2to3 mpg drop any day with these numbers.
Dave
I went from 3.15 (performance gears on the A4.) to 4.10 on my A4 and it has been great. Best and most noticeable thing I have done for feel of the drive. I'm happy I didn't go with a lower set of gears. I left the stall stock because this car is a daily driver and didn't want a higher stall.
Maybe consider going to 3.90 or 4.10 instead of just to 3.42. (Stock on some manuals?) From 2.73 it would be a great change.
13.3 to a 11.8 with them, converter and headers/x-pipe.
You dropped 1.5 seconds off your 1/4 mile times with only those mods???? That seems a bit far fetched to me. What stall is it and what did you use for tires?
I went from 2:73's to 3:42's and a 2700 stall. All the work was done by Chuck C.O.W. I dont know how he did it but I picked up almost 2mpg. Been checking it for 3 weeks now and thats how it came out. Of course your looking at one of the BEST tuners around. You can check out my post (Chuck C.O.W. Makeover) if you need more info. You wont be sorry with the gear upgrade!
