Default 3.42's

I have heard that 3.42's really wake up an automatic. My question is if this is the case why is it that Chevrolet never had/have it as an option? Is it mechanically or just by choice?

Actually, I went from 2.73s to 3.42s and the fuel milage didn't change that much. I went from 30 mpg highway to about 28 mpg highway. I also went from an anemic 13.30 in the quarter to a respectable 12.90!
I'll take the 2to3 mpg drop any day with these numbers.

That is on my winter mod list. You would think that would have been done by the factory. But I guess MPG are a better selling point.

went from 2.73's to 3.42 and love them!

13.3 to a 11.8 with them, converter and headers/x-pipe.

Wow! I am just about sold on this then. Did you buy the gears new?

I went from 3.15 (performance gears on the A4.) to 4.10 on my A4 and it has been great. Best and most noticeable thing I have done for feel of the drive. I'm happy I didn't go with a lower set of gears. I left the stall stock because this car is a daily driver and didn't want a higher stall.

Maybe consider going to 3.90 or 4.10 instead of just to 3.42. (Stock on some manuals?) From 2.73 it would be a great change.

Find a used one, wouldnt be hard to do.

I paid $800 - used, a few years back, but the market is low now so you may pick one up in the $500 to $600 range

I suggest you get a stall converter also as the labor is minimal if your getting the gears done.

Oh, dont forget about a trans cooler if you get the stall converter.

beacuse AlGore wouldn't allow it.

Sadly; too many people in the early 1990's dismissed this chickn-little as a "talking head on TV - that can't really do anything".

If you think that's bad; just wait to see what other restrictions we are forced into within the next 4 years.

It's all about the corporate EPA fuel economy ratings.

Al Gore. Not an exaggeration.

By building most A4s with 2.73 gears, and offering the 3.15 ratio as an option, GM was able to meet targeted EPA fuel economy ratings.

The car really should have come with 3.42 gears with either transmission, and an option for 3.73 or maybe 3.90 on either transmission.

3.42 is the minimum as far as I'm concerned. Even with 500rwhp, I was regretful that I didn't go more aggressive.

I've got a 232/232 with a Vigilante 3200 stall in my Camaro SS. I enjoy the cam lope more than the blower whistle in the 'vette.

You're going to fall in love with your car all over again.

You dropped 1.5 seconds off your 1/4 mile times with only those mods???? That seems a bit far fetched to me. What stall is it and what did you use for tires?

Default 3:42's

I went from 2:73's to 3:42's and a 2700 stall. All the work was done by Chuck C.O.W. I dont know how he did it but I picked up almost 2mpg. Been checking it for 3 weeks now and thats how it came out. Of course your looking at one of the BEST tuners around. You can check out my post (Chuck C.O.W. Makeover) if you need more info. You wont be sorry with the gear upgrade!
