so today i was on the highway doing about 65-70 when i decided i wanted to screw around a little bit. i revved it up and dropped it into what i THOUGHT was 3rd gear. now maybe i haven't gotten use to the short shifter yet but apparently i put the car in 1st. the compression locked the rear tires up and i went across two lanes sort of sideways. i know, stupid. sounds aweful too. i was wondering if this could have hurt the car in any way. I got on it a little and listened closely afterwards and the car sounded fine but im still alittle nervous. thanks in advance for any info.
p.s. my girlfriend was with me at the time and thought i "meant to do that". haha no not exactly lol
You win the Dumb Move of the Month award.
I see you have only had the Vette a month. You have to Learn how to drive.
Aside from hurting yourself and your girlfriend. You could have seriously hurt some innocent people in another car when you went sliding across 2 lanes at 75 mph.
Oh BTW. You might have some flat spots on those rear tires
Very lucky dude.Get to know the car a little before you do something like that.Im sure the cars fine, these are some tough cars, but you and others could have been taking a dirt nap....................................

If you have no "CHATTERING", slipping, vibrating and no grinding noises coming either from the rear or the tranny then you have "NOT" done any damage.
You will not overev your motor because the Rev Limiter will have kicked in to save you.
Continue to watch the Vette as you drive for "ANYTHING" unusual and drive it like you normally would otherwise you really wont be able to tell if there is much wrong - so drive it as you would normally! Of all checks out then you're fine and the Vettes are pretty strong too!
Actually, at 6200 rpm, speed on a 3.42-geared C5 is about 54 mph so 75 mph put you at ~8611 rpm. Hopefully you pulled you foot off the accelerator quickly and the sideward motio scrubbed the speed off to where no damage was done.
Thank goodness no one was hurt - be careful out there.

Thanks,Matt
I don't see how the rev limiter would work when down shifting? Explain please. The wheels would take the engine to what ever the rpm is at 75 plus in 3rd.

The rev limiter WILL NOT protect you from over-reving from a downshift. In this case, the rear wheels drive the engine to higher speeds. The rev protection is an electronic protection that cuts fuel off when limit is reached. On a downshift, the rear wheels will drive the engine to whatever speed MECHANICALLY, even without any gas.
I see a clutch replacement in your future! You will be the luckiest person I ever heard of if the facing doesn't come off the disc in the next few hundred miles.
