I'm sick and tired of this gas gauge issue and trying to find a round about figure on how much its gonna cost to replace one or both if need be. I thought I seen a thread on here that talked about the labor hours and the prices for the parts but I can't find it.
I just talked to the dealership and this was the quote for a 2001 Coupe:
$45-diagnostics
$438-LH tank(this is level sensor only)
$842-RH tank(the entire assembly has to be replaced)
Does this sound about right? I seen in one thread a member paid $900 but he didn't say for which side. I just don't want to get screwed cuz I'm uninformed about something.
This is a rip-off from yoru local stealership! You can order the left side level tranmitter from Gene Culley for around $150. You may not need both. I found someone on this forum to GIVE me the right side level sensor!
Just keep looking here and you will find what you need!
Please try a bottle or two of Seafoam first,I was close to replacing mine and a fellow club member told me about it,great stuff,I used two bottles to fix mine 9 months ago and no problems since. A very cheap fix.

What's the procedure of adding Seafoam??? I know you apply it to the gas tank thru the gas nozzle but do you apply it on a 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or full tank of gas????
Techron, purchased at any auto supply store, will also fix a faulty fuel gauge system. If you have Chevron or Texaco gasoline in your area, they both contain Techron. It may take a bottle or two of Techron to get things to work, but it WILL work.

Mine is getting fixed as we speak. I have always run Chevron or Shell in the car but eventually they die. I was on my way back from a long cruise when the gauge went from 1/2 to E but the car still had 8 gallons in it when I filled it. It stayed on E all the way to the shop later in the week.
To the OP, they are ripping you off. You're asking for nothing but trouble by going to the dealer.

I wonder if these additive will help the wifes Tahoe..... at about 1/4 tank reading on the gauge the damn thing runs out of gas...... ask me how I know..
Replacement part number for the left sender (the one that typically is the issue) is 10333749 and GM Parts Direct is showing a current cost of $77.51. Any of the forum parts vendors (Gene, ect) should be right around there in pricing too.
The fuel pumps are easy to get to. Remove rear left wheel, remove fender inner liner, drain tank, remove pumps straight out the back of the tank if the car is a 97-02.

So if just adding Techron can fix the problem.....what caused it in the first place?
Its caused by sulfur build up on the sensor in the tank. If you catch it early with a fuel system cleaner such as techron it will remove the deposits and the gauge will begin working again. If the deposits are too heavy it needs a sensor change

Thank you for the information...how's the weather in England?
I used Seafoam ( WALMART*) and it worked for me..also in the past I used Chevron techtron which also worked...i did double up on the recommended amount..Sulfur in the gas is the problem . You should not have that problem if you use Chevron on a regular basis.
