I'm trying to install the following oil catch can in my 1997 C5, but can't seem to figure out the proper method. Does anyone have some installation photos they can share? I've had this thing for months now and every time I try to install it, I get confused. I must be getting old!!!
It's really simple. I have 2 2002's - one with the stock PCV setup and one with the Z06 conversion. Both have a catch can which are similarly hooked up.
The stock setup has the lower hose hooked to the intake manifold just behind the TB while the upper hose goes to the PCV valve. The PCV valve is still connected to the PCV hoses coming from the valve covers. Here's what that setup looks like.
So, disconnect the hose that goes from the PCV valve to the intake manifold and attach the bottom catch can hose to that port on the intake manifold. Attach the upper hose from the catch can to the now-open end of the PCV valve that was previously attached to the hose going to the intake. What you're doing is putting the catch can in between the PCV valve and intake manifold.
Please be aware that most PVC or polycarbonate -body (clear) filters are rated to about 125 degrees F. The area near the engine within which many people mount their catch cans can be 165 degrees or more. In addition, blowby gasses commonly exceed 170 degrees F, so if you DO mount your filter in that location, check it regularly for heat-related damage. Personally, I recommend mounting any catch can as far away from the engine bay's main heat source - the engine, as possible.
According to Atlas Copco, "....oil carryover through filter media increases exponentially according to the temperature at the filtration interface."
