I hold mine in the center about 6" up, then give it a light push down, and it closes on both latches every time. From this height, I don't think anything is going to crack.
I just lower mine to about 18" up... holding from the center... and then let go. It does the rest all by itself!
On rare occasions, one side might latch while the other doesn't. In that case, I use my palm to nudge that side shut by applying pressure directly above the latch. (Using a soft rag between my palm and the hood, of course... I hate scratches / smudges).

Letting it drop from about 18" should do the trick, but what I always did was just set it down gently and then gave it a push on each side over the latch mechanism.
Whatever side I am standing on, I reach towards the middle-ish and grab it and slam it down with average force, letting go about 3/4 of the way closed. It latches every single time and does not stress any part of it.
The hood is not made of glass. Just close the thing.
I push gently on my hood, and have had the latch come loose at 70mph before, several times. Nothing happens, a corner sticks up a little bit, I stop, latch it down and make sure it is all the way. That is why ther are reverse open, so if they open at speed, no problem.
My C3, if you floor it from a stop it torques hard enough that it pops one latch open about 1/2 the time. I have hit over 100 with one open, and nothing. ONly damage on the hood was from the previous owner using the slam it to close it method on my C3. On all of em, lay em down, push on top of the latches until they click down. Then go.
