Default epic question...

i was just curious as to how to "properly" close the hood on a corvette...do you just slam it while holding the drivers side of the hood? do you rest your hand on the centre and then wham it?

just seems that every time i close my hood it feels like something almost breaks off.

The fiberglass hood weight should allow it to close by itself if everything is adjusted/aligned/lubricated. I recall most saying they just drop theirs from about 2-3 feet. That sound is scary though...seems like cracked 'glass and/or paint should eventually occur.

I have the factory carbon fiber hood on my car. It's weight is less than the fiberglass and it seldom closes by itself the first time, so I close one side and then the other.

On one forum, a member posted images of cracking on his hood near the front hinge attachment points...

I just lower mine to about 18" up... holding from the center... and then let go. It does the rest all by itself!

On rare occasions, one side might latch while the other doesn't. In that case, I use my palm to nudge that side shut by applying pressure directly above the latch. (Using a soft rag between my palm and the hood, of course... I hate scratches / smudges).

when you say you close one side then the other...you basically lie your hood down, walk over to one hinge, press down gently, walk over to the other hinge, and repeat? so there is basically no bashing of the hood.

I lower the hood gently, then use my palm and push down on each side. I am scared that if I drop the hood the latch will not catch and damage the hood. It takes me less then 15 seconds for a little peace of mind.

I have had some real trouble trying to get my hood closed sometimes...made me look like an idiot at the track one time. Previous owner had another hood on the car so i think when the stock hood was put back on it may be a tad mis-aligned even though the outside has no odd gaps. Its like somedays it will just drop closed others i had to nudge both sides to clip. Maybe because of uneven ground

I push my down in the center at the top and push down a little. Sometimes it only closes on the driverside. I just walk around and push the pass. side down till it latches

I always set mine down, and push firmly on top of the latches on both sides until it latches. I have an aftermarket hood and the raised cowl areas in the very rear of the hood don't exactly agree with the wipers. If I were to drop it, the extra force would bring the hood dangerously close to the wiper blades and chip the paint or break the wiper blade.

Winner. My hood has some cracks in the corners from being "dropped" prior to my ownership.
