Just returned from a great trip down the mother road from Michigan to Oklahoma City. Ran Route 66 from Joliet, Ill to Oklahoma City, Ok. and spent a week with my daughter who graduated from OU. Aside from the occassional rain and cool weather, it was great. Got to meet up with forum member Jim Rose in OKC. Thanks Jim for the good conversation over a couple beers. With every stop sign and light in the small towns along the way, a 12 mile backup at 4-8 mph in Tulsa (that will wear out your clutch leg), city driving for a week in OKC, and averaging 76 mph on the return trip, I still got an overall average of 26.5 mpg. Obama would not be impressed, but I am.
I did the Route in my '69 convertible in 1998 from Tulsa to Flagstaff. The very best road trip ever, with experiences that will be with me forever. From being asked "You boys doing the Route?" at every stop, to seeing the Blue Whale because we just happened to drive by when the caretaker was there to coming into Tucumcari at dusk and seeing all the signs lit up....

Sounds like a great time and a very trip. I've been down some of the stretches of Route 66 around here, but someday hope to make it down many other stretches in other states.

Sounds like a nice trip. I did Route 66 in a Vette 9 years ago. I drove all the way across country from Mass to California, up through Big Sur and back, 7400 miles. I drove as much of the Old 66 from Oklahoma to California as I could. Some of those stretches through Arizona like Sitgreaves Pass are fabulous. Trip of a lifetime. You need to do the rest of it some day
We drove a good portion of Rt. 66 back in `99 returning home from the Corvette Caravan. Started somewhere in Missouri (near Springfield) and went as far as Kingman, AZ. There are some fantastic sights to be seen all along the route. Will Rogers Museum and Route 66 Museum in Oklahoma, Cadillac Ranch & The Big Texan near Amarillo, New Mexico is beautiful country, Meteor Crater, Flagstaff, Seligman and Hackberry in Arizona. Very trip.
I lived on 66, outside of Oklahoma City, when it was still a US 66 (back in the late 70's). My parents owned and operated a gas station/garage and I can still remember all the cool cars stopping in as they made there way across the country. It is one of the reasons I have owned all the Classic cars over the years. Of course even back then, we had GTO's, Nova's, RoadRunners and Mustangs sitting out front. I am the youngest of 5 gearhead Boys. I wonder what those real US 66 signs are worth? I might know of few signs a young man appropriated before the State pulled them all....

Thanks Chuck. She got her Masters and now starts the PHD program at OU. I have no idea where she gets this from. It didn't get passed down in the genes...!!
