Just picked up a "99" coupe yesterday, been without a Vette for a year, and finally am back in the game . My question is how do I get rid of those awfull [in my opinion] body side moldings without messing up the paint? I simply don't like them as I think they break up the lines of the car. Any advice is welcome. Thank God I am a Vette owner again! I felt like I was getting "old" lately and I'm only 62!
I have owned 19 Vettes over the last 44 years and the c-5 is the best Vette ever!
Corvettes for ever, Dave
a heat gun helps, after they are off use adhesive remover for the left over glue (I don't remember which one I used). Some people report the need to buff or clay bar after but I didn't need to.
I recently removed the BSMs off my 97. Here was the procedure i used.
1) Goo-gone just over where the BSM meets the door.
2) 35 lb fishing line on a saw motion. Make sure you dont' start cutting into the plastic with that stuff
3) High pressure power washer. Use the flat tip as a "blade" to cut the remaining mounting tape from the door surface
4) apply goo gone, let sit 1 minute
5) Power wash again.
6) remove remaining goo with your thumb

I agree fishing line, I used 3M adheasive remover.
I was not sure if I wanted to remove mine for over a year and one day said why not.....
Happy I did, The body lines seem to flow much better with out...

Once you take them off,if they are not damaged ,how much would you want for them?

Hair dryer to soften up the double sided tape, fishing line for sawing through the tape, and perhaps a helper to handle the BSM as you saw through the tape.
I have thought about removing mine, but I get cold feet everytime. I have this sinking feeling that there will be an issue of lines showing or slightly different color in the paint. Maybe one day I'll bite the bullet and remove them.
Well, I just finished taking them off! I used heat and the "goo gone" to prep and the fishing line trick to remove them. Worked out great and then used Mothers detail spray and clay bar then wax to finish up. It came out great with no lines showing you can't tell it ever had the moldings and looks much cleaner to me. Thanks for the help.
