What could cause a rapid tem increase in coolant temp? I've noticed that my temps have been running higher than what has been said to be the normal range and plan to pull the radiator shroud tomorrow to check for any blockage and possibly change the thremostat. Yesterday I reprogrammed the fans to come on sooner and this has helped, but this morning I started the car and the temp read 80 degrees and by the time I got to the end ofthe driveway the temp was up to 85. In less than a mile it had risen to 180 plus. No I didn't have my foot in it, no faster that 30mph.
Could this be an indication of air in the system or a bad thermostat. I've been under the car and did not see any major blockage. I also have not noticed any problem with the coolant tank cap.
Check to see if you picked up a plastic bag, these bottom feeders pickup all sorts of things ,if you have never looked up into the radiator core you are in for a surprise.

on the first ocassion it reached 250 sitting in heavy traffic with outside temp at 90+. The next day I checked for debris blocking the radiator. I did this from under the car. After that it would get up to about 235 in regular traffic. As stated earlier, I reprogrammed the fans to come on at 195 and it has helped as the temp has only gotten to
215 sitting at a light but pretty much stays at 205 (but the outside temp has only been about 80)
I had an issue a while back where my temps would rise to 245 sitting. I knew this was wrong regardless of the "our cars run hot" posts. Turns out the water pump was shot. No leaking or noise to give a hint. Replaced the part and all is well.

I'd bet it's crap in the radiator. You have to stick your head under the front and look way up to the top 1/3 of the area.
I have found plastic bag pieces, cigarette butts, styrofoam pieces, candy wrappers, grass/weed cuttings, corn stalk pieces, and all kinds of other crap in the 10 years I have owned my C5.
I usually clean it out in May or June and again in the Fall.

I looked from the bottom and will be pulling the radiator shroud tomorrrow. Could it be an air bubble or a bad thermostat? the water pump was replaced last year.
