I have a problem with my shifter popping out of reverse and also grinding when trying to put into reverse. This is the only gear I'm having any issues with what so ever.
This starting happening right after a certain screw up on my part. I was down in La on a long straight road, no traffic, and decided to let her breathe a bit. I got a little excited and when I went to shift into 5th I hit reverse instead. I pushed it hard a couple of times before I realized what I was doing and corrected my mistake. I didn't think much of it until I couldn't get it into reverse without the grinding. I talked to RPM Transmission about some parts and they pretty much told me that if reverse was having issues it was just a matter of time before other gears started having issues. They didn't say I needed a rebuild, but recommended that it be looked at to make sure there was nothing else going on.
All that being said......do yall think I can get away with changing the reverse gear, blocking ring and shifter fork caps?
Second, I thought this car had a reverse lock-out and wouldn't allow the car to be shifted into reverse while moving forward. If so, is this a problem? It should have just not let me shift into reverse and not made a sound right?
It's a 2001 coupe. I also placed this in C5 Tech to try and get more exposure to my issue.
mine is doing the same. still haven't been able to fix it. i tried adjusting the shifter and even changed out the reverse lockout solenoid. still broken.
Thanks for the post but "synchro issue" doesn't really help me out. I was planning on replacing the reverse gear, blocking ring, and put on bronze shifter fork caps until RPM Transmission said that I may have other issues later on with other gears.
I was hoping someone that has had this issue would come forward and tell me what they done or someone with tranny knowledge would lend some advice to help save me some money.
Each gear is somewhat independent. Depending on the mileage and wear, other gears may be worn beyond acceptable tolerance but you just dont know it yet.
each gear should have pyramid shaped teeth and these teeth get worn down over time, grinding hastens the wear.
There is no cure for your reverse problem except replacing it. Before you start ordering parts, I would have it torn down and inspected then go from there.
Mine will pop out of reverse as I let the clutch out unless I really jam it in,then it's fine.
If the shifter is only 99% into reverse,it'll pop out -gotta get it that last 1/16" in for it to stay.
It doesn't grind unless I get stupid, and try and jam it back in while rverse gear is still spinning.
First gear does the same thing occasionally, although not as often.
Talked to a co-worker about it(he's got a '99 Coupe),he says his does it too-just "the nature of the beast"-just jam it in,and it won't pop out.
So I'm not going to worry unless it gets worse, and it hasn't changed in 7 months of daily driving.
My 2002 Z06 does the same thing intermittently. All I do is keep my hand on the shifter (with forward pressure) after I put in into reverse. Then when you let the clutch out, if it did not fully engage reverse when you 1st moved the shifter, it always pops completely into gear while letting the clutch out. No popping out or grinding whatsoever. I've gotten so used to doing it that it has become second nature to me now. Comforting to know that I am not the only one experiencing this issue.
The syncro issue isn't going to be the only problem if you ground the reverse gears while going fast enough to be in 5th. Syncros can only do their job to make sure the gear meshes while shifting. But if the gear is chipped or has a bent part of the sprocket, that could cause the shifter to pop out of gear. You might want to see if you have metal flakes in your trans fluid now.
If there's metal flakes, you're going to want to rebuild the trans soon. That could be detrimental to other gears as well... But if not, you may want to still see if you have a chip or something on the sprocket or if the fork is bent.
Is it really hard to get it into reverse all-together now? Like you have to muscle it in?
I know this is an old thread but I'm sure this can help other members who is having similar problems. The Vette T56 have triple/double cone synchros for the 6 forward gears. Unfortunately the reverse only has single synchro (bronze) and if you ever shifted into the reverse gear without having the trans slowing down, the reverse gear grinds into gear. Over time, the "engagement tooth" gets worn everytime it grinds and looses the "teeth". This gets worse unless you replace the reverse gear and blocking ring. The synchro can be reused since reverse only uses one side (flip the outter ring for fresh teeth).
