Does anyone know of a new-and-improved underhood light to replace the stock item and shed a bit more light on the subject? Maybe something with a few LED's? I can find a zillion places selling LED work lights, but have not seen anything that would be permanent (and 12v).

I replaced mine with a bright blue LED.
I wish it would not go off now because LED's will not drain a good battery unless they are left of for days or weeks.

Anyone know how to keep them on past 15 minutes?

Default Under Hood Light

I went searching on the 'net and found a few LED fixtures made for 12v that won't need transformers, controllers, voltage regulators or anything complicated for what seems like a reasonable price, so I think I will go that route.... the car is Arctic White, with red and a bunch of chrome under the hood, so I'm not sure how blue would look. I will have to think about the color -- maybe will stick with white.....

Thanks!

if you really find it an issue, a small toggle switch (available just about everywhere electronic parts are sold) can be spliced into the harness down below (just about the same place you would "insert" the switch kit described in this thread earlier). wouldn't cost you more than a buck or two if that much and would solve your problems. personally, it doesn't bother me as it goes out eventually and is only a problem on a windy day when the hood "rocks" back and forth from the breeze. it resets the lamp timer all over again, lol! at that point, just seperate the connectors. not that big a deal in my opinion.

Why is this even an issue, GM has added battery protection for years in order to keep people from running the battery down. Most everything will turn off after 10 minutes or so.

I either unplug it (connector is down by the radiator on the passenger side), or just let it go off by itself - usually takes about 15 minutes.

Not exactly plug and play, but by far the coolest thing available:
http://www.oznium.com/high-intensity-led-floodlight

This is a pair installed on a customer's car. They're blue cause that's how he rolls.

You can also get a 3-pack for a little less $$ but they must remain in a string of 3.

I have been looking at the Oznium Strip LEDs to to maybe add some light in the engine bay.

Where is the best place to splice these in? To the Underhood lamp harness?

Is there some type of mercury switch in the hood lamp that sets the timer? Where is the timer?

I used a $6 copier door cheater switch wired to the battery, when the hood is closed the light is off, when the hood is up the light is on and when the switch is pulled the light is off.
