It's fraud and it's interstate. You might contact the FBI...
If the scammer is using your VIN contact them. Of course they can pull a VIN off your car out in the public parking lot for that matter. I went the whole 9 yds a few yrs ago on a local scam that also appeared out-of state. Contacted the newspaper, sheriff's office and FBI. Never got any feedback.
I think the FBI hasn't got the resources due to the proliferation of scammers that are out there now. They're multiplying out of control. I've seen them give CF a try-out before. When I spot an obvious one I can only click the yellow triangle to alert the mods since we have the no interference rule on FS threads.
But once they borrow your good english, it gets that much harder to detect. Just wait till they set a sucker price closer to reality. It's really going to hurt the guy who gets all excited and sends a deposit.
And don't think they operate out of Nigeria exclusively. They are setting up all over and are getting much more sophisticated. Any funds you send are transferred immediately oversees from an acct they set up here.
Its the OP's peragative to trash a website that's selling scams. I appreciate the head's up. Next time somebody tells me that C5s have been retailing for under $10K, I'll know where they're getting their info from.
For actual Corvette buyers out there..if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
If that happened to me, I'd try to arrange to buy the (my) car from the scammer and bring three big friends to the meeting.
Thats not how scams usually work. More than likely they would want you to wire transfer the money or a deposit and once you do that you would never hear from them again.
I plan to buy a few slightly used and low priced Vettes on line as soon as I get the money from the African diamond heir who needed my bank account and SS# to wire my 50% commission to help him transfer his funds to the US.
I saw this site a couple of years ago when I was starting to look for a C5. Must say some of the prices were a bit too good to believe!! kept looking here,,till I found a great deal locally. Almost went cross country,,logistics just got too problematic!!
I think the site does bear some responsibility. Like the link I posted, I have owned that car for 10 months now. Told them the first month after I had it, that it is my car, not for sale, and the add was a scam by using their email. It is still up, by the same fake owner out of New York, with the exact same add. They did take the vin off of it, which if memory serves used to be listed. My point, is the site, even when notified does not do anything about it. There fore they house some responsibility. If my dog craps in your yard, and u mention it to me. I don't say it is not my fault, im not responsible for where my dog craps at. They are responsible for the adds, especially when they are told of the problem.
Use common sense. If the buyer/seller constructs the deal so that you must send them money (even if they've given you a bank check with an overpayment) it's a scam. The bank check will prove to be a forgery. Your money will end up in Nigeria.
32 People responded. Well done. I see things much more clearly now. Thank you. I thought it was the web site that did all of this. Oh my goodness I was so confused. I would have never guessed that it would be an actual individual scammer. Thanks so much for taking the time and sharing your wisdom it is so greatly appreciated. I am sure someone with your intellect and knowledge is a very busy person and for you to take the time to straitening this out for me is deeply appreciated. I am in your debt. Now it all makes perfect sense to me. I can’t believe I missed that. I am really glad we have got this taken care of. I feel so much better now. Thank s again for taking the time and I am so sorry if I offended you with such an unknowledgeable post.
The only reason the scams are around, is there are suckers who fall for it. I had a C4 for sale on corvettetrader.com and received two scams. Both wanted to purchase the car but the buyer had to leave the country on an emergency job and left a check for 5 K over my asking price with their agent . I was to mail them the 5K and they would have the car picked up do all the paper work, pay for shipping, and drop off the check. I called corvette trader and they told me that scam has been running for at least 5 years. So, there must be some suckers who fall for it. I also called the FBI and they said the scammers were probably in Africa and they could do nothing to help. I sent an email back to the " Agent " and told them I would mail them the check but I did not have a bank account. My wife and I just snuck into the country on a watermelon wagon and had not had the time to open an account. Could they just come here with the check.. Funny, no more response from them and their email address suddenly closed. Sorry I missed the sale.
