ha guys and girls,i got a ticket on I75 in byron ga for 87 in a 70.first ticket in 20 years.does anyone know how the traffic courts work in ga. ga has a additional fine of 200 dollars over the speed of 85.if i go on my court date and plead guilty would the judge lower my ticket?if he lowers my ticket buy 3 mph the ticket will not be reported to my insurance co and no points will be assested.thanks all..
If I was you I would go to court. Usually (at least everytime I have had a speeding ticket the Officer issuing the citation was there and they usually lowered the speed) they will lower to 77 in a 70 so you will pay a minimum fine and court cost. Haven't had a ticket in GA since 2000 though.
Merely lowering it below 85 does not seem like it would avoid getting reported to your insurance co. If they changed it to a failure to keep right or running a stop sign maybe you'd be better off but speeding is still speeding and I'd bet the ins co will be notified.
not familiar with Ga., but in florida there are loads of law firms that specialize in "taking care of" traffic violations. not certain what they do, but as a general rule for a fee they go to the courts and work something out so that you don't wind up with points on your record. of course you can only qualify by being a non habitual violator or by having the violation be "simple" in nature like speeding or rolling a stop sign, etc. you might want to take a look through your local yellow pages and see if there are any attorney ads featuring such a service.

Don't know specifically about Georgia so take this as it's intended (a suggestion). Some municipalities have a "diversion" program that allows drivers (who have clean driving records as you say you do) the opportunity to pay court costs but have no fine. As long as you don't get another ticket within their prescribed timeframe (usually one year), then that ticket goes away. It doesn't get reported to insurance and doesn't go against your record. HOWEVER, if you get another ticket, then both hit you at once! This arrangement is made through the city (or county or state depending on who gave you the ticket) prosecutor and can be done by you without the need for an attorney. That's what the attorneys are doing for you for a fee. Just call the prosecutor and ask about this opportunity.
Some other's have a driver's class you can attend. California is famous for this program.

Good luck!
Same in Texas. It's called "Deferred Adjudication".
Also need to ask if you're eligible to take a Defensive Driving course to have the ticket dismissed.
Here in Michigan, I have had a couple of speeding tickets changed to impeding traffic so I wouldnt get the points. Even the state of Kentucky was willing to help me out by changing the speeding infraction to a lesser offense with no points. Good luck!
Get a lawyer or talk with one. You may pay the same or more, but may get the fines and penelty reduced. lawyer would know if there are any programs/conciderations for someone without previous violations in order to get reduced fines/points. Reduced charges will always save in the long run.
Did he give you 87 in a 70 for an absolute citation? Or were you 107 in a 70?
In Michigan if you were actually going 87 the cop usually would write you for 75 or so. (all this would be assuming YOU were not an A$$hole to the man) And your actual speed is on the ticket so if you challenge it you risk a higher ticket. (Unless the cop does not show to the hearing, as all is dropped due to no witness.)
Because they can easily move it to a 107 mph ticket and give you homework for the rest of the year!

got 24 over (74 in a 50 zone) in Georgia on the way to Florida a couple years a go. I was in a construction zone with no workers in sight on I75. In Valdosta the posted speed drops like a lead balloon from 70 to 60 to 55 to 50! Anyway, I paid the $200 fine from the Florida vacation and took my punishment...realized later he could have hit me for the double fine of $400!, so he did give me a monetary break, but the points showed up in Michigan later, however, my insurance policy still says rate is based on no tickets/accidents. I was warned in Florida by several people not to fight a Georgia ticket....waste of time and $$$ driving back and forth because you will lose if you are out of state.
Not sure about ga have a friend whos a gbi agent but here in tenn we have driving school cost the same as the ticket but doesnt report or show on insurance and no points off of your license
