That is a little plastic piece that sits inside of there. It will be very hard to find unless you can get it second hand from somewhere. If you go to the dealer it will be around $300 to get the whole assembly. Good luck, hope you can find a reasonable replacement for the little sucker.

A real PITA - If you go there disconnect the Park Solenoid wire
I had my A4 stuck in park. Taking off the boot cover involves taking off the console and a lot more. I had NO CHOICE. The shift indicator is in there too. If you unplug the park solenoid wire you will NEVER AGAIN have the shift lever jammed in park. I would not go thru the trouble JUST TO GET THE PLASTIC INDICATOR to display. You can FEEL which gear you are in so thats enough for me.

It takes very careful removal of the shifter assembly to prevent breaking the indicator needle. You have to follow the manual for the step by step removal. The indicator is a "L" shaped piece which one part of the indicator fits into a guide that follows the shift lever. The needle is actually "trapped" inside the display section. Once you have the shifter assembly out you will see what I mean. So I dare to say that the part that fits in the shifter guide is broken off.
I broke my indicator needle when replacing the indicator lamp in the shifter console. Luckily I had all the indicator pieces where I could glue it back together. But you have to take the entire boot & indicator assembly apart to fix. I also increased the clearance in the "slot" where the indicator slides so it would not bind.
They do not sell the indicator separately.
