Default Trunk "popper" (spring)

Has anyone added the spring to their trunk lid (deck lid) to make it pop open higher? I don't want to keep "picking" in that small gap to get it open and wondered if anyone else had done this?

If so, did you buy a kit for it or just go to the hardware store and buy a spring as it looks like almost any spring in the right length that will connect to the Torx screw will work.

Mike, I saw a post some time back that showed how you can bend the spring that is there to make it work better because they didn't like the looks of the pop up spring. You might do a search and see if you can find that article. Good luck. Ron

Thanks Ron.

I looked more thoroughly and found this by member C5Ron:

Also, look into the latch and you will see a small rod about a 1/2" long. it pushes the lid up when the latch is released. Over time this will be pushed down and not pop the lid as much. Take a pair of needle-nose and pull it up a little bit. Also, the rubber stops at each corner can be screwed out a turn or so and that will help. I have showed a few guys in our club this and it helped all of them with the problem.

Although, i'm not sure if a coupe is the same. Have only done it with verts and FRC..............

I overlooked it at first but went a re-read it after your reply. Thanks!

Mike

Mike, make your own it's very easy. The post I used to make mine is below and the write up is by DeeGee.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...-the-vert.html

Here's what mine looks like and a picture of how high it pops the trunk up on my Vert.

I had the same problem and this is what I did:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...up-enough.html

It takes maybe 5 mins to do if you have never done it before and has worked perfectly for me ever since. The best part is no home depot spring on your car. The spring idea may work well but looks like hell and all you need to do to fix the problem the right way is a little adjusting.

PM me with any questions if you have problems but it is fairly easy to do and I'm sure you'll get it taken care of.

Good luck, Mark

I don't want to take any sales away from Forum Vendors but if you can be bothered with a DIY here's what I did:

Trunk Popper for a Vert or Z06

This is an easy mod but for those of you who prefer to buy the ready made item it sells for a very reasonable price of $15.95 from one of the Forum vendors. Unfortunately the vendor doesn’t ship overseas so I needed a DIY version:

c5trunkpopper.com
NO LINKS to non-SVs

If you want to try yourself, pick up a 7/8” compression spring from Home Depot. They retail at $3.98 for a pack of 4 springs, 2 large and 2 small. You’ll also need an end cap of the same diameter. I used a 7/8” rubber stopper ($1.76). The advantage is that it acts as a soft buffer and can be trimmed to fit.

Cut the large spring to a length of 2”. The springs are quite strong so it takes a bit of elbow grease to cut it. Tighten the radius at the cut end of the spring to give a hole to fasten the screw through.

Undo the T30 torx screw on the right hand side of the closure plate. Insert the torx screw down the barrel of the spring and retighten it in place.

Slot the bung in place. You can trim the bung to get whatever fit you prefer. With it as shown it takes a good push to close the trunk. Trimming the bung will make it easier to close..

It took 10 minutes and all the lubrication and fiddling with the lock are a thing of the past.

Additional springs are a total waste of money and time.

I just did this adjustment and it worked to perfection.

For some reason a MOD locked the thread... have no idea why?

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...our-vert-trunk

It works and it only took about two minutes, very simple.

The links dead.

I adjusted mine about 3 or 4 times before I gave in and fitted the trunk popper. I guess its best if you can adjust.lubricate but the spring really does work

I think it's positively amazing that a thread meant to help solve a problem would be locked, then deleted. Is it because it solved a known problem without purchasing a participating vendor's product?

I can see where the original spring might continue to weaken and have to be adjusted (bent) several times, but it's still easier than adding something that hangs down from the lid.

after i installed my trunk seal kit, it pops up plenty enough. the seals are springy enough to lift the trunk lid a little bit. then u dont have to install a retarded spring either. i tried bending the stock spring but it didnt seem to work too well. now i dont worry about it anymore.

Guys, check the OPs question. He asked about the trunk popper

We've all tried the lubrication and the adjustment

Why don't you ask a moderator/admin why the thread was locked/deleted?

Has anyone noticed any detrimental effects of adding the spring? IE, cracking to the fiberglass/paint just above the attachment point...
