issue: one morning I put it in reverse, and it grinded horribly. No big thing put it in reverse again, and all was gravy.
well the problem has slowly came back, Sometimes the gear "clicks" going into reverse sometimes it doesnt. Occasionally I will have to put it in reverse 2-3 times before it engages in the gear. Any ideas?
sounds like its time for a rebuild. usually any time a tranny doesn't work as it should...you have pretty big issues. there usually is no "quick fix" for them...
Do you have an after market shifter? I had a similar problem and my Hurst shifter had a few bolts loose. Once I removed and tightened them the problem went away. If not I doubt it is the reverse solenoid. But you can try to remove the solenoid and reconnect it just in case it may not be seated to the plug. It is a PIA to get to! I would try all the obvious things first before you go to the expense of removing the transmission.
Have you tried shifting into 3rd, then reverse? Sometimes if i go straight to reverse it will grind a little when I start to move. Seen other posts with same issue.
Yeah, I wouldn't say anything major is going wrong as it is a common problem. I find if I hop in and go into reverse, most of the time it won't go all the way in, shift into 3rd then back into reverse, all should be good.
the solenoid is on the topside of the transmission. If you have fairly small hands and a lot patience you can get to it. Do a few searchs on this and you'll find quite a bit related to this. If you find this does not solve the problem as long as your forward gears are fine I would wait until you have other issues. Again make sure you also don't have something going on with the shifter. If you end up where you cannot get it into reverse then it may be time for a transmission removal and repair. With such low miles on this have you checked with a local dealer to see if they can do anything?
i have that problem as well, nothings wrong with your tranny that has happened in almost every car i drove reverse is just a beoch to get into sometimes and otheres is like butter.

Usually wont go into reverse when I am backing up my steep driveway. After a shift to 3rd it goes right in.
