I put Chromed OEM wheels on my 03 Z06 a few months after I purchased it new in October 2003. The wheels were guaranteed for three years and almost to the day the chrome started to flake and come off in pieces. There is a chrome shop close by but they won't touch wheels....said that they are too hard to do and that the finish won't last. My existing wheels are proof of that! By the way, these wheels have not been scratched or abused and have received plenty of polish, wax and elbow grease!! I've even considered buffing the detoriating chrome finish off and having the aluminum wheels polished but I'm afraid that solution may create more problems and additional maintenance.
Has anyone been able to find a chromed OEM style wheel (17" front & 18" rear) that will last better than this? Would appreciate any suggestions or advise.
Preparation is key to good chrome. Wheels take a lot of abuse even with the protection you've given them.
Personally, I don't care for chrome wheels just for this reason. I'd rather deal with maintaining polished alloy than flaking chrome or chipped paint or powder coating, although the latter is pretty durable.
You could have the chrome removed professionally (chemical removal), then have the alloy polished and clear coated (or powder coated in whatever color you want).
This company has a good reputation, but you should verify that for yourself. They offer chrome oem wheels on an exchange basis. They also custom paint or powder coat. Wheels are their specialty...
