Default No more automatic T56

Well, I've been driving her for a week and the one thing about the car that was driving me up the walls was CAGS. I STILL don't know why they put it in the Z06, much less ANY of the T56 cars, but a manual transmission shouldn't force you into any specific gear.

"Hi, I bought a manual. I'd like to make some decisions for myself. Thanks."

If I wanted the car to tell me what gear I should be in, I'd have bought an automatic.

I don't know if it was doing this for you the non-M12 transmissions, but mine locked out EVERY gear except for 4th. I couldn't even get it in 3rd. So 15MPH would come up and it would force me to go into 4th and bog.

Friday night I had my friend turn CAGS off through HP Tuners and I haven't been more happy with the car. I get to decide what to do with the shifter now!

Glad you got it un-CAGS'ed. That's the very first thing I did when I took delivery back in '01. I, for one, am thankful the Corvette development team thought of it though because it eliminated the gas-guzzler tax for the Corvette.

^^^ Yeah, but it'd be nice if they made it "easier" to disable.

A .50 resistor is hard? It's a simple bypass. CAGS was about avoiding the gas guzzler tax-would you rather by a bypass for a couple of bucks or pay the Fed Hundreds/Thousands for the tax??? WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? If your such an expert driver, you would have realized keeping your RPM's up would allow you to shift into any gear you wanted. Did you read the OWNERS MANUAL?

Well, that's one way of putting it, but he's right, it was all about avoiding the gas guzzler tax.

Easy, Tex. I knew how to get around it. I knew about the resistor. I knew about the computer. And I knew about the CAGS eliminator that people can buy. What I was saying is that it would have been nice if CAGS could have been disabled from the menus which is easier than getting under the car or hooking up HP Tuners (which is what I did).

Yeah, I read the owners manual. I also knew that keeping my RPMs up would stop CAGS. but there are times I couldn't. Here in Los Angeles, we get bumper to bumper traffic that lets you get up to about 14-15MPH before making you get off the gas and idle forward. I'm not going over rev just to go forward 20 feet.

Calm down. Don't get defensive.

Well then don't pi$$ and moan about what is/was a clever idea from GM to save you tons of money that only cost you a few dollars to bypass if you want. Go look at a Challenger or Mustang-see the GAS GUZZLER TAX at the bottom-Corvette owners don't have to pay that-cudos to GM I say. If traffic is so horrible, maybe you need a different Daily Driver.

It's not my daily driver... And again, calm down. You sound like you spend too much time yelling at people. I never mentioned I care about the gas guzzler tax... Hey, if it's not there, that's awesome. But again, you're the one mentioning it over and over.

And traffic is what it is in Los Angeles. My daily driver is a 300zx 5-speed and I don't have problems with it in traffic, nor do I have issues with the Vette (anymore LOL).

I don't think I was pissing and moaning about it. In my OP I was saying how happy I was that it was disabled. And it didn't cost me a dime to disable. You seem to be so caught up with the money aspect... I'm not.

I've had cars with gas-guzzler tax. So going from those to this wouldn't have changed anything for me. Now that I don't have it, great. It's a bonus. But I still think the option to turn it off would have been nice... I understand that if we did have the option, we wouldn't have been able to get away without a gas-guzzler tax. You don't need to keep reminding me. I knew what it was for in the first place.

Ironically, since I've disabled CAGS, my economy has gone up. LOL

That's what CAGS was there for and it's ridiculously easy to disable already. GM saved the OP a good chunk of $$$.

That was how GM was able to avoid the gas guzzler tax mass producing these cars.

I've never actually dealt with it. I had a CAGS disable resistor ready before I bought both of my T56 cars, and the very first thing I did was install it. I can't believe you would live with it for more than maybe a day

I just trained myself to drive around it. It is still operational but I rarely ever hit it. The easiest way is to shift to second before the speed gets to 14 mph or the next easiest is to wait until after it goes past 20. 2nd gear is very useful at speeds in the 10 mph region so CAGS isn't a big deal. Simple and cost effective.
