Default Exterior mirror gremlin

Occassionaly when I close my drivers door, the side mirror adjusts itself to a different position. Not sure if its something in the switch controller that jars when I close the door or its because my leg is close to the switch console and maybe it impacts my leg when the door shuts.

Only noticed it when the mirror has moved then forget to recall if it hit my leg or not.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Mine does it almost daily. I believe it has something to do with the memory feature failing.

Interesting Lance....I kind of wonder if there isn't a short in the switch? I guess I need to research how the memory is stored...

Have you pulled back the rubber gaiter in the door hinge to check the wiring. Maybe you have a chafing wire. Normally it blows fuses but if its only a minor nick in the insulator, it may be enough to cause that

If it was a weak battery the memory would dump at random times. The fact its associated with closing the door makes me think wiring.

Thanks DeeGee,

I haven't looked into yet but that is a good idea. One other thing I have to look into is I was in the car sitting in the rain one day and I noticed a drip through the weatherstripping (its a vert) and that drop fell right onto the switch panel. Not sure if previous moisture had gotten in there but I suppose it could happen.

I will have to look into the door wiring you mentioned.

Thnx

Are you using different key fobs to lock/unlock the car occasionally. The fob with the "1" on the back sets up for the first memory setting and the fob with the "2" on the back sets it up for the second memory setting. If you're the main dirver, set both memory 1 and 2 to the same and use the 3rd for the other driver. That will stop it from going back and forth.

Both of my key fobs have a 1 on the back of it.

OK, here is what I have done to further solve this issue...Not solved yet but...

Confirmed key fob #1 is being used and it indeed activates Memory #1. Wife has fob #2 and when she uses it, Memory #2 stats are recalled.

Rubber wiring and all in door jamb seems to be clean and uncut or damaged.

When the issue occurs its just the mirror and A\C fan setting that changes. No radio, no seats, no telescopic steering, etc.

If you close the door before putting key in the ignition, it never pops up.

So I am guessing there is a loose wire or something wrong in the door panel connection? Maybe a minor short or something that when the door is closed, the movement of the panel causes the issue to occur.

Mike, did you ever get this resolved? I just bought an 02 and I'm having the same issue with the drivers side mirror not retaining it's memory location. Mine sometimes works, but most times doesn't.

force,

I have not "resolved" mine yet but I am 99% sure of the cause. It hadn't done it for about three or four weeks...then it rained on me one day, some water dripped off the roof when I opened the window (the vert seem to drip water right off the roof where you don't want it) and the switches got some on them.

I immediately dried them off but later that day, got in, started the car, shut the door and the mirror goes haywaire to an extreme position!

I am convinced the switch gets moisture in it and it crosses the circuit or something.

I guess I could replace the switch or see if there is a way to replace just the membrane cover???

I would just replace the switch to see if that fixed it but I am guessing they are not cheap.

I recently acquired a '03 C5 50th and was told the passenger mirror was knocked off (not trying to be a chauvinist, but it was definitely female driven). Then when the mirror was replaced I was told the mirror never truly worked great after that, but only relative to the 'memory settings' feature. Manually it works fine. Never has problems. But when I enter the car, sometimes that mirror goes to Operator #4's setting, if you know what I mean.

Actually it is kind of aggravating. But it is not so much of a problem that it has hit the top of the fix-it list, yet.

I have noticed when the mirror moves to Operator #4's setting the #1 memory setting light next to the Memory button flashes quickly for about 5 seconds.

Anyone have any ideas ??

Thanks.

This seems to be the same problem as mine except mine is the drivers side. I noticed today that when it does it the driver1 light flashes and the mirror move back and forth just a tiny bit (kinda shakes back and forth). If i hit the button while its flashing it stops and the mirror stops shaking. Also, I noticed going down the road if I have the radio up the bass shake that mirror but not the passenger side. Anybody have any ideas?

I don't know how to fix this one because I can't get to it with my Duct Tape. My brothers would say that Duct Tape is a 'requirement' of mine.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. A Corvette and Duct Tape...... What a dichotomy.

When my 2001 had this problem, the dealership replaced both mirror motor packs inside the mirror housings. Two of the five pegs that snap into the mirror back are vertical & horizontal sensors that do nothing but report mirror position data to the memory system. If either the motor packs is failing OR if the pegs are not securely snapped into the mirror back, the mirrors will have a mind of their own. The pegs can come loose on their own.

My drivers mirror started doing the same thing last week. When I opened the drver door the mirror moved down and out. Last night I reset memory on door memory button and it stopped moving when I opened the door. I have not drivin the car yet but time will tell.

Following up on Choreo's excellent info, has anyone 'run the codes' to see if the mirror issue was being reported?
