I wouldn't want new tires that were that old - either try the Tire Rack or consider a set of Firestone Wide Ovals.

OH GEEZE I WISH!!!! I get about 6-8 months to a set of rears, and about twice that for fronts........over a grand a year just for tires! Of course as a daily driver and sometimes briskly driven, I'm surprised I get them to last as long as they do

BTY, the older date code tire will drain water better than the new one....the new one will a bit stiffer in the edge and have an ever-so-slight advantage in turn-in, but unless you auto-cross or are drifting, you will never notice the handling difference.

The problem may not be Goodyear. Who's to say how long Discount had them in their inventory. At least they are trying to make it right.

The date code is certainly disappointing, but all I see is the different wear bars.

Am I missing something?

I ordered a complete new set, they are at Goodyear now waiting for me to come in and have them mounted on Wednesday. I will surely pay attention to the date code.

No, I was there when he called Gooyear on the phone and had them ship the tires to the discount store. The when we orderd another front set I talked to Goodyear on the phone myself asking about sending newer tires. The tires came from the Goodyear. Discount Tire dose not stock any tires older then 2 years old.

You are right to want "new" tires though and I would be taking the same steps that you are in this situation. If the dates on the front and rear tires were both the same and the only difference was the wear bars I would accept that as being fairly minor and not going to affect the performance of the tire.

If you go with tirerack the only issue would be shipping something back if it was wrong. Not saying it can't be done but it certainly isn't the easiest thing to do, lots of hassel. Let us know what happens.
Ok here is a better pic of the 2 tires side by side. You can see were the wear marks are the same but the 05 have that extra mark on the side of the tire ( were I marked DIFF ).

BTW new tires have not come in yet. Should be any time. I will let you all know how it turned out. Thanks for ALL the posts!

I used to think that tires were only designed for 4 or 5 years, so I would not accept tires that were more than a few months old. Now, the manufacturers are saying replace them if they are 10 years old.

I still would want the newest tires I could get, but they probably would not be unsafe if you replace tires every 3 or 4 years.

The last time I bought tires from Discount Tire, they were all less than 6 months old.

You don't show the entire footprint of each tire, but that pic looks like there are a lot more sipes in one over the other....that would be way more significant as a 'difference' than the wear marks.

Good catch on the date codes -- and BOOOOO to Goodyear. I've used only Discount Tire for some 40 years in three states, never had a problem, and they have a corporate policy of mounting and balancing race tires for free. Good company!

I would not drive on tires with that old of a date code.

Those have been sitting around for a long time, I believe the tire was introduced just a few years earlier ('03 comes to mind I'd have to check).

Mine were 1008, the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus ZP was the second generation and was released in 09-08.

Mine turned out good, codes were 0609 for the 17's and 1209 for the 18's. They are the Firestone Wide Ovals.

Discount Tire store manager near me told me that they never sell a tire stamped more than 6 months ago.
As for longevity, I replaced 30,000 mile OEM GY rears on the '99 last summer just before the 1400 mile trip to Carlisle. OEMs were worn in the centers as I tend to overinflate tires for a stiffer ride. The OEMs showed no signs of age, were not cracked at all, but I didnt want any problems on the trip.

I work for a major tire manufacturer and can tell you we have short age limits to OE manufacturers which is manageable but replacement market can be much older. The reason is logistics. It is virtually impossible to give a 6 month guarantee to the replacement market and keep acceptable inventory levels. I'm sure all large tire manufacturers are in the same boat.

OK Here is a up date. The new front set came in yesterday. They were dated 05 AGAIN ! Again they called Goodyear and Again NO HELP from the Goodyear people who take the orders from tire companies. I stood and heard the two duke it out on the phone ( I could only hear one side of the conversation ), here is how it went. Discount Tire guy said, " What do you mean 4 year old tires really aren't that old for tires, We advise people to change their tires every 5 years and we do not sell a tire older then 2 years old. I need to speek to someone ells who can help fix this problem. Don't you have someone who's ahead of your department?"
There's a long wait then he talks to someone ells. This is how it ended. DT guy says " So your telling me you can't do anything to a sure that we dont get another set of tires dated 05. That's crazy ! Well I'll put a note out to all our stores letting them know to check the dated codes on every tire orderd from Goodyear".

So that's how it ended. They are trying to fine the tires from someone ells.
I will try Tire Rack this weekend or on Monday to see what they say.
This all happend at the Discount Tire Store in Flower Mound Tx. on route 407. Again Discount Tire has been very good to me and have told me to keep driving the car on the date coded 05 tires that are on the car till they get me a knew set. So we'll see what happens???

Thanks you all for posting and I'll let you guys know what happens.

Exactly my point above. It's very difficult especially for low volume tires. Although, 4 year old tires are on the excessive side. Sounds like they've got a messed up distribution system. Try another manufacturer unless you really want Goodyears.

As much as I like the Goodyear GS-D3s, I have started to look into diff tires from diff manufacturers.

Keep on trying to get 2007 or newer tires. One question I have is, I think the difference you were pointing out were tire edge wear indicators. Maybe they stopped putting the edge wear indicators on the 07's, is every cut grove mark the same? I'd still demand an 07 or newer. I think your warrentee is off after 5 years anyway, so buying a set of brand new 2005 in 2009 would be a bad move warrentee wise... Good luck

Yes the Diff is in the out wear tire edge indicators. The O7 do not have them. Also on Post #22 it talks about how the newer ones have a little stiffer side wall. You are correct on the warrentee being up after 5years.

A up date:
They have orderd another front set ( trying one last time ). But They also orderd me a new set ( front and back ) BFGoodrich g-Force T/A™ KDW for me to try out. They said if the Goodyear front set come in "AGAIN" ( for the 3rd time ) dated 05 that they will install the BF Goodrich tires on the car and give me a week or two to deside if I like them. At that point I can keep the BFs or we'll try another brand. So again they have been very good to me all this time. I do have 4 cars and I have been buying all my tires from them for the last 14 years so maybe that has helped a bit But they are still going way out of there way for me to be happy with the new tires.
I just called and they said the tires should be in today or tomorrow. So we'll see. ??????
