Service Steering column PLEASE READ AND HELP.........
HELP CAN ANY ONE TELL ME WHAT THE 4 RECALLS ON THE STREERING COLUMN LOCK ARE 4006, 4006A,4006B,4006C?HAS ANYONE OUT THERE HEARD OF A 2nd RECALL#204006 C ?This a cry for help.Has anyone out there who had the recall done on their Vette back in 2004 for STREERING COLUMNS LOCKING WHEN THE CAR WAS IN MOTION.Well I did and I had the recall done in the fall and put my car away for the winter. Then in the spring when I went to take my car for a ride this message came up saying Service steering column, but I thought the message was coming up because the dealer disengaged the steering column lock, and so I now have no steering column lock, so I just thought that I had to get the message cleared,WRONG.when I put my car in drive and proceeded to go the car shut off and that is exactly what it is suppose to do because the computer is now in a safety mode.Ok I called the dealer he towed my car in repaired it and everything was just fine for 4 years till last Friday when a message came up stating SERVICE STREERING COLUMN and now the computer again in safety mode won't allow the car to move on its own it just shuts off the motor and you are stuck were ever you are at the time.I bring it to the Chevy dealer but not the one who fixed it because they no longer are in business and I'm told that The repair is my responsibility not GM's.So I Called GM customer service and is told the same thing, I put only 5000 miles on my car in 4 years and am experiencing the same problem that was caused as a result of the recall back in 2004 and they don't won't accept any responsibility for it at all. THIS IS A $1265.00 FIX. AND i FEEL THAT SINCE THE RECALL DIDN'T INSTRUCT CHEVY TO PUT A NEW STREERING COLUMN IN THE CARS that were RECALLED then they should be responsible for any problems relating to that recall that may occur for the life of the car, They are the ones who installed this defective part in to the corvettes in the first place. If there is anyone else out there that has experienced the same malfunction due to getting the recall performed on their Vette please let me know.THANK YOU john( silvettster@yahoo.com)

Reason: Questioning WHAT ARE ALL THE RECALLS ?
There are two issues to be concerned about if any of the recalls have been performed. One is the installation of the legendary GM K Harness between the actuator and BCM. These have an exceptionally high failure rate. When they fail the column will NOT be able to be unlocked and hence you are stranded. The second issue is the Fuel Shutoff. If your PCM has been reprogrammed then when the BCM gets into a state where it has requested an unlock and does NOT get a response that the operation completed, it requests the PCM to enable fuel shutoff. There are dozens of ways for the BCM to get into that state. Even if the column is physically unlocked, the BCM thinks it's locked because it didn't receive a complete and you are stranded because the PCM cuts fuel at 2mph.
If you are one of the few whose car has never had any of the GM Column Lock services, you are still subject to the actuator (more specifically the microswitch in the actuator) failing. When this happens the column will not be unlocked and the car is obviously undriveable.
The stories about the BCM being damaged by the after market CLB are bull. There are tens of thousands of CLB's installed.
Your choices are two:
1) Don't install a CLB and wait to be stranded (you will be)
2) Purchase and install a CLB and forget about the column lock/fuel shutoff problem forever.

I just went thru the same thing amigo! Mine had been done already also. I escaped with a colunm lock actuator for about 600.00 smackers. You probably should shop around for a better repair price. Once fixed...order the column lock bypass from coh. this will hopefully fix any computer glitches in the future.
If you can still hear the actuator cycle when you turn the key, you can remove the Harness K relay installed in the recall, and reconnect the actuator.
You may want to install a CLB relay for the long term fix.
If the actuator fails, even though the column does not lock, you may still get stuck.

tHANKS FOR THE ADVICE, you purchased the column lock bypass from WHO?coh. is who? JOHN
You got some great advice. The GM fixes for this problem are little short of a scandal. Three botched fixes and the solution was to cut the fuel off so GM are not liable. And now owners have to pay for a safety recall. Brilliant.
Just a thought. If you're a low mileage driver I've heard of weak batteries causing the column to lock. Recharge the battery or replace it and it may get rid of the symptoms.
You need to fit the CLB (Column Lock Bypass) as recommended but the wheels need to be unlocked before you can do that. The CLB fools the car into thinking the column is unlocked.
Thanks DeeGee, This winter I kept my battery on a battery tender so it would not go dead . Could the battery tender have any affect on column service message. My steering column is not locking up my problem is on the DIC a message is coming up service steering column and the car shuts down my fuel supply. Towed it to the dealer and was told that parts shorted out and had to be replaced for $1265.00. Tues. I get my car back and then I can list the parts they said that they had to replace & I'm getting the old parts back also to have them tested. I thought that the only thing the dealer would need to do is to clear the message so that the car would be able to drive again. JOHN

It'd be interesting to know which part of the recall failed - parts fitted under 4006, 4006A, 4006B or 4006C.
I know GM say that owners are now liable for the cost of fitting the GM safety recall on the column lock but this looks different to me and I'd be following up on it. If parts fitted during a safety recall have failed then they haven't fulfilled their duty of care.
I'd say there's a strong case for GM covering that bill. Maybe time to check with a friendly lawyer? JMHO
And I agree with 8Vette7, $1265 for a $50 fix is highway robbery.
