Got a steal of a deal on a Corsa X-pipe.Running Corsa touring with the stock H on my M6 right now. The touring are barely loud enough,,and I like the light crackle pop rumble on decel. I researched on how you can slip a short piece of exhaust pipe in the muffler and cover the reversion ports just inside the inlet and it is supposed to make them sound a little more like the Pace Cars. My concern is just HOW MUCH of the crackle pop do you loose?? I still want some of it,,and once you cut the H you are committed!! X-pipes with ANY systems jump in!!
So what causes our C5s to sound like a motor boat is because of the H pipe?
There is NO cross over/exhaust pressure balancing effect there,, only a dime sized hole in the side of the main pipes. The cross pipe is more of a brace than anything else. No motor boat,,I like. Smoother sound,,I like,,,,but I'll miss some of the crackle!! Loose some I don't mind,,but hate to loose all!! Have to think about it befre I cut!!

I know the H pipe doesn't balance the pressure at all.. since exhaust gas wants to escape through easiest and quickest route, it wouldn't turn 90 degrees through that tiny little hold.
But I guess what I was asking is, does the motor boat idling noise come from the H pipe?
If so, wouldn't a stock cat-back sound decent with an X-pipe?

I don't know if I can answer this or not but this is what I noticed.
I installed a Corsa system on my car and that is when I noticed the "motor boat" sound. I also noticed the crackling sound when I let off the gas. My Corsa system is the louder Indy system.
I hated the "motor boat" sound and installed an X pipe. The X pipe smooths out the exhaust flow which takes away the "motor boat" sound and makes the car NOT as loud riding around. It makes it sound smoother. The H pipe is doing nothing.

Hope that helps.
Wait, you got the motor boat sound AFTER you installed a Corsa cat-back?
I thought motor boat is mainly with stock exhausts.
what is this motorboat sound that everyone is talking about? I've heard it many times before. my C5 doesn't sound at all like a motorboat and never has. anyone have a vid?
I've been thinking about X pipes for a while because it may tone down the borla drone some, however my favorite part of the exhaust is the burble on decel, I don't really want to lose that.

Maybe your C5 isn't stock (as far as exhaust is concerned). When it idles, it sounds like a motor boat

My exhaust is bone stock at the moment and motorboat is definately the best way to describe how its sounds. Where's that Vince Vaugn Pic when you need it...
Start your car then walk around back and listen to it for a sec. If its stock you'll know what we mean. My car doesn't snap/crackle/pop on Decelleration at all though so its sounding like yours may not be stock mcgilles.
I'll take a Vid of mine in the morning. I want to do a before and after before I put on the new exhaust anyways so nows as good a time as any

Great thread!! I have the motor boat sound too!! Recently installed a Mid-America Exhaust. I do NOT have the x-pipe.
Is it worth it in terms of sound ? Will the exhaust be louder or about the same? What about performance? Will the x-pipe help a little? Thanks!
