I have a c5 vert, four speed auto. I have what just may be the stupidest question in the history of the boards. I’m not sure which gear to drive in when I’m not exceeding speeds of 30/35 mph. When just casually driving around the city (no freeway) should I put the car in 3rd or should I use 4th/overdrive?

I just leave mine in D. Only use the lower gears if decending a long hill, I live in the Mtns., in order to not have to stay on the brakes.
BTW, only stupid question is the one not asked and you have to pay for the repairs.

I had a friend tell me to always use 3rd unless I'm on the interstate/highway. I wasn't sure what to do. So if I just use D/OD I won't damage anything? If that's the case I'll just use D.
I have an 04 auto and around town keeping it in 3rd seems to be a nice gear and you can down shift into 2nd and or 1st without hitting the button on top of the shifter. Doesn't seem to be hurting anything so far. Hell, when I'm out on a fun run, I down shift to 2nd as long as my speed is under 55mph entering a corner. That puts my tach at about 3000 RPMs and then throttle through and out ,then tap the shifter up to 3rd as the revs build. The computer controls everything so there is slim chance of over reving unless you for get to upshift. My car is stock and alot of fun when opened up every once and a while.

Why do you do this? Just to mess around? If you wanted to shift, why didn't you get a stick?
There have been several threads about how driving around town in 3rd can cause heat build up in an A4.Your computer knows better than you,put it in drive and let the computer decide.

My point exactly. Unless your dragracing or in some extreme climbing conditions, why the heck would you mess with your auto transmission yourself?
Did you ever think to READ you owners manual? In the early days of Automatic OD, the circumstances to shift into OD was CRUDE. You would end up in OD too soon many times bogging the vehicle. Many would say in the OWNERS MANUAL to leave it out of OD in city driving and into OD on the road. My Ford PU has a button just to engage/disengage OD without moving the Shift Lever. There are also hilly roads that can make the OD kick in/out alot, that would be another case you might want to disable OD.
