In the auto tranny Vettes I've driven... if I leave it in third... then at a speed I know should kick down when I floor it... It just bogs... Lame.
If I leave I in drive, and floor the throttle in the same location of road, at the same speed... The car downshifts an extra gear and the acceleration is very strong.

No my friend, you won't damage anything. Keeping the car in 3rd however may cause you to use more fuel and break down the engine oil quicker. I've noticed that even driving around "in town" that the car will go into top gear, lowering the rpm's. Don't worry, if you need acceleration, that skinny pedal on the right let's you remember you're in a Corvette.
OMG !!! It's an automatic, just put it in drive and it takes care of the gears for you. That's the whole idea of an automatic. Is this your first car ? Did you take a driving course ? Sorry, but you're right , it's a pretty dumb question

Why do you do this? Just to mess around? If you wanted to shift, why didn't you get a stick?
Serious.
I don't get it!
Perhaps the guy bought a totaled Vette to part out for a Factory Five GTM build and it didn't matter if it was an auto or manual, then decided to drive it for fun while saving up money for the GTM... then again maybe that's just me

Manually shifting it in a lower gear works wonders for auto crossing. You don't want to floor it coming around a turn or the back end will let go and if you keep it in drive by the time you get out of the turn and do want to floor it the transmission will already be in a much higher gear and will have to do a rather harsh downshift. You will probably respond with "if you want to auto cross get a manual" but not everybody wants a manual when they aren't at the track. Since most of the driving won't be at a track someone might opt for the transmission that suits their driving needs 90% of the time.

OMG I disagree. Think about all the production cars that now have some form of "sport shift" or "paddle shift", every company calls it something different. I have an Audi A6 and a Lexus IS350 and both cars are automatics but both have options to shift manually as well. The Audi shifts up or down with the stick once you slide it to the right and Lexus has that option plus paddle shifters by the wheel. You act like it is a stupid idea and nobody would ever have any business manually shifting an auto but the reality is that most car companies (especially higher end/ sport/luxury sedans) are making cars with this option. To insult someone by suggesting they don't know how to drive, especially another Corvette owner, is uncalled for and just makes you look ignorant. Remember that everyone is different and has different driving needs and wants and you should be respectful of others opinions.
Just leave it in "D"...there are heating issues with the tranny's in A4's. Besides the computer does know better when it comes to WOT and casual driving. That's why it's there. I get better torque when I go WOT in my A4 vs. using the gears.
I leave mine in D for regular driving andf I left it there for city and freeway driving in the US. I drop it to 3 or even 2 for the more twisty roads in England otherwise I find it wants to upshift through the corners. I find that uncomfortable. Also, the kickdown has a short hesitation. I drop a gear manually if I want to overtake and want an instant pick up.
The advice here was if you do use a lower gear keep an eye on the transmission temperature.

I have a c5 vert, four speed auto. I have what just may be the stupidest question in the history of the boards. I’m not sure which gear to drive in when I’m not exceeding speeds of 30/35 mph. When just casually driving around the city (no freeway) should I put the car in 3rd or should I use 4th/overdrive?
Told ya it was a stupid question!
That is a great question. Leave the car in third. You DON'T want the transmission shifting in and out of overdrive. It WILL wear out the transmission. Leave the car in 3rd until you have steady speeds above 45-50mph.
