The sensor may have gotten dirty. Suck any fluid that is in there out then pull the sensor straight out of the hole in the back. Wipe it down good and simply push it back in. It has to go in with a certain side up so if the message comes back after filling, turn the sensor 180 degrees.

Mine is empty also , but no warning. I think I may have disconnected something a year or so ago, I'll have to look at it to pass along any info. A feature I have yet to use on purpose.:o
You should use it from time to time, will keep the pump working and the motor for the wipers from ceasing. I turn my on just before I get ready to wash the car and push a few squirts of windshield washer fluid . takes a few seconds and can save you a few dollars down the road

So you are using some (if you drive it with gusto) even when you dont "use" any.
I do notice that when getting on it. Scared the crap out of me when I first saw it... It has not done it in a little while though. I need to check tonight, but I think my tank is just low.
