Any ideas on why my speedo would quit working after a transmission swap?
Tranny in 2000 died, so I picked up a used one from a 1998 that is in good condition.
The shop swapped the trannies and now it shifts great, but the speedo is dead. Cables are connected, etc... Asked them to swap the sending unit from the old tranny to the new just in case that's the issue.
Are there any other setup or connection issues I should be aware of?
The VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) is not getting a reading if you have tried swapping it out already.. I know on the C4's there were different color plastic gears that were for different gearing, trannys, etc.. so first make sure you have the right gear, next make sure you are getting a good connection.. the pig tail from the harness on the C4's had been known to become faulty with age.. and exasperated with the fiddling that comes with a tranny swap.. also make sure the connections are clean and dont have any goo, grease, oil, etc in them.. also make sure the VSS is installed at the right clock face position.. If I recall correctly they can be forced on in the wrong rintation and the gear teeth wont mesh.. (I think its 180* out of phase). Lastly, on the old 700R4's there was two shaft positions for the plastic gear on the output shaft (the drive gear - as opposed to the driver gear on the VSS). depending on which car the tranny is in the position of the drive gear has to be changed..
I know thats a lot of stuff from a C4.. I had this exact same problem with my C4 back in the day and it too months to figure out.. it grows old quickly not having the speedo work.. but with GM alot of this probably applies to the C5.. or at least give you some things to think about.
The C-5's don't use a gear type thing from the older cars. Its all electronic. There is indeed a sensor that plugs in at the rear of the differential ( I think its the differential for this item), that transmits the speed to the PCM
Well glad to hear a happy ending with a simple solution!! Was a bit worried by the title,,,thought maybe some one had an indecent exposure incident at the pool!!Sorry,,just a slightly warped sense of humor here!!
