OK, so I realize that the center console hinge can be quite confounding, but what about the latch? I just came home in my new/used 2002 coupe last week only to open the center console and have it refuse to shut. I've put as much pressure on it as I dare, but no dice. It seems as if the catch won't allow the plastic "prong" back in. Am I missing something here? I don't want to break something, but it's starting to irritate me. (The lid goes down--the hinge seems alright--it just won't snap shut.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Look at the latch carefully, it work a lot like your door latch. You may be able to just flip it open (because somehow it got bumped shut) and it will work fine.
The piece in the console is prone to breaking...Only about $10 from GM..
Or simply falling through. It drops in from the top and mine falls through after a little usage. I removed mine but if you want it there just epoxy it in for good.

Have you tried putting the key in the lock cylinder and rotating it back and forth to make sure the latch part is fully unlocked or not coming loose inside and somehow rotating around so the "tang" can't go back into it?

Happened to me. I drove the car for a month unable to figure out why it would not shut. My friendly vette mechanic showed me what was wrong. DUH!!!!
It helps a lot to lube the latch with silicone grease or oil to prevent the internal parts from binding, if the latch binds it can be ruined by the console lid striker acting like a hammer on it. The better the internal parts can be thoroughly lubed the longer the latch will last and work right.
