You may need to double/triple that $$ amount if your going to paint the entire car. Are you going to be doing most/all of the prep/post paint work? If so, I would expect $3.5K to $4k would be more what you need?

I had my Camaro painted for about that much, not painting interior jambs though. Not crazy about how it turned out though. The silver came out fine but the black on my roof had a few contaminates in it. May have been a fluke as it was a painted a few years back when we got hit with 3 Hurricanes/Tropical storms in a row all while my car was at the shop. 
If you want the name of the shop I can give it to you, its in Lake Worth near I-95 and 10th avenue.
I looked at another shop around that time but they said they didn't even look at a job under 10k.

You may get MAACO or Billy-Bob's paint shop for that price, but if you want it done right you need to bring it to a shop that knows how to work with fiberglass. Lots of labor! And that costs grande $. Just my hood and front bumper cost me $3000 at Jamison's Custom Corvette here in Charleston. OEM paint and no custom work.

2k way too low for a quality paint job. Doing the same color will help some savings with door jams and body spots, but realize how many layers of paint,clear,buffing,etc. I was given a cost $6500 and that was a great price from what I have been told.Good luck

But yes I agree you will need $4k for material ond labor. More if there is any type of body work including nicks or chips.
I have spent as much as $8k just for material if high end paint

You can get a paint job for that amount, but don't expect it to be high quality. Normally a really good paint job will cost you anywhere from $4.5K up to $8-9K.

I am paying $4.5k for my 1987 to get painted a wet black and he is giving me a deal and I did work myself, like remove the rear bumper and buy a new one and remove weather stripping, sanding small parts and remove light and other basic things. It is expensive.

you can do an outside reshoot for that if you do some of the prep work yourself. quality paints like the higher end ppg line will cost nearly 500 in material. if you only reshoot the outside it's do able, at least around here. there's NO WAY you'll be able to have jams, underhood or any small stuff done for that price. you're almost better off hiring a paint student at the local college and renting a booth. the worst part about shooting a car is the time involved in prep and finish. if your paint is already good you could probably do a scuff n shoot with decent results.

For a nice paint job, in a clean shop that paints corvettes, it should be around, $8K easy, for a clean job.
But i hope you can find a place to do yours cheaper, and a nice job...Just keep looking.

ppg dbu is around 120/qt in most colors, reds maybe 200, i have no idea why red is so crazy. 2 quarts will easily shoot the outside, reducer is $40, clear is 90 a gal + 50 for activator for the cheap stuff or double that for ppg. i guess if you bought all the really good sh*t it would bump to 600-650. i didn't figure any cost in primer since i doubt he will need it. paper wise you won't need more than 220 and 400, one gallon of wax n grease remover is 10 bucks and various other trinkets always find their way in. it really helps if you have a local body store near by so you can get prices similar to what i quoted.
while i agree 8k is about right for a ground up job on an older muscle car that you really enjoy, it's also half the value of your average c5. he's also looking at a plain reshoot versus a body up color change.....i think....
it would take over 100 hours to do a real frame up job on a car. a scuff n shoot on the outside of a vette..15 hours tops in bodywork and around 5 to shoot it. figure 20-25 hours@50/hr= 1000-1250 plus supplies gets him right about 2k. i doubt a shop would sell the supplies as cheap as i quoted though, that's shop cost. he's going to have to live with rock chip waves at that price though. using primer filler and blending can easily add 10 hours on the job

I think some people gladly pay these high price b/c it's a "vette".... I am not a paint expert, but these cars did not come with high end ppg from factory and they look great.. There are other great paints out there, valspar, etc. that are not as expensive..
Painting door jams, etc when doing the same color? Not needed, I think... that's too much work / labor obviously... I only went that far once b/c it was a color change...
WIth those prices, it's worth just trading in and using the so called $7-8K for down payment on a newer car, don't you think? LOL
