Default Broken Stud what do you think?

I left my vette at my wifes work today so I could use her car to haul some stuff. When I came back I noticed this stud broken. Now this is the stud that had the lock nut on it. All the others are tight and I tourque them propperly & I am the only person that removes and mounts my wheels. Has anyone else ever had a stud break like this or do you think someone might have been trying to steal the wheel? I am not sure how long it has been missing except that it was there 2 weeks ago when I removed the wheels to clean them for a show. So somewhere between then and now.

If you didn't do it and you didn't take it to a tire shop, then I too would think someone was trying to help themselves to your wheels. Surprised they stopped at that one lug though if it had the locking lug on it.

Is there wear inside the hole...
it looks egg shaped, or the stud is all the way to the left side... ??

I think it is the angle of the camera. The stud is perfectly in the middle and not touching at all. The hole does have wear on it like it was over torqued. I have removed them many times for cleaning and never go more than 105 lbs. And have never seen the wear on the inner hole. It is looking to me like someone tried to get it off and went the wrong direction.

I don't think someone was trying to steal your wheels, I think it just snapped, If they were trying to get your wheels I would think you would of found other lugs loose.

....so, how in the world would you go about breaking a stud in the process of stealing your wheels? Seriously - how would you get that kind of leverage on a locking nut in the first place? Did the thief have a 4' breaker bar?

Crazy...

I wonder if they couldn't get a jack under the car at the time??? I have never seen a broken stud on a wheel yet to this point. Or maybe you just over-torqued it when you put the wheels back in the car?

I keep a breaker bar in my wifes car becasue she cant get enough force on the one that came with the car. But the only wierd thing is that the lock nut would be the hardest to put that much tourqe on due to the way is was designed. Im just going to replace the stud and get a whole new set of lock nuts.

Its possible I have to roll up on boards just to get my low pro jacks under it. Either way I will make sure it is in a more visible spot next time its left alone outside.

I think 105 ft lbs is too tight. I think 100 is max. I never go beyond 90 on any of my vehicles and then just check them occasionally, I really don't think they need to be that tight. You may have just overtightened a weak stud and it finally broke off? Was it the only one broken out of 20?

Yes it was the only one. I may start going 95 - 100 this next time around.

Yes, thats exctly what I was thinking. Its REALLY tough to get that much tourqe do to the design.

Good luck with the repairs - at least its not major damage. But i would always be wondering if it happened on its own or from someone.
