Hi, I am new to these forums and its about time to purchase my first corvette. I am looking at the 1997-2004 corvettes. My question is, Is every 97-04 exactly the same? not including the zo6. I come from ls1 camaros and mustangs so I am new to c5's. I am 19 years old and Im going to have around 15,000 to spend. Can I find a decent one for that?
The cars are basically the same throughout the C5's lifespan, 'tho there were significant upgrades made in 2001 that carried through to the end of production. I suppose it is possible to find a decent C5 for $15,000, 'tho you will have to be patient and careful. More likely that amount of money will buy you a car with high miles and many more potential problem areas than a lower-mile car. Remember, although we are not talking Porsche or Ferrari repair costs, the Corvette isn't cheap to repair (although this forum can save you a LOT of $ if you use it well).
C5s can go high miles if well-kept (forum has listed 300,000 and even 400,000 mile examples) but if you could swing just a bit more money and take your time looking you will be able to buy a much nicer, lower-mile, post-2000 car. If at all possible, have a garage or at least a carport to keep the car in. Spend a few minutes each day perusing the Tech section of the forum to familiarize yourself with repair issues so you will be able to deal with whatever comes up on your car without freaking out or subjecting yourself to the tender mercies of the dealer. Good luck

thanks for your reply. Im not going to rush into buying one. I just did a quick look and I found a 1998 c5 bone stock original owner always garaged for 16000 obo... It just takes so long to save up while going to school full time and only working 25-30 hours a week.. What are some of the common problems these cars have?
