If you get a diff from an auto, take the ring and pinion out of your's and put them in the new one. Just make sure you get a 3.15 diff from an auto and the 3.42 ring and pinion will work fine. You can't do this with the 2.73. (easily)
Since his diff is bad, the gears/bearings are shot and cannot be transferred to the new case. The case is not his problem - the internals are. If anything, he can get a new set of internals and have his diff rebuilt.
To put it in a little simpler terms,,First gear would be taller and a little more difficult to get moving smoothly,,but it would wind out longer!! On the other end 6th would be almost useless as the gearing would have the motor in lugging range at normal highway speeds. 5th would be more like 6th and so on down the gearbox!! Yes,,technically it would run,,but you would be VERY dissatisfied VERY quickly as the overall driveability would SUCK to put it bluntly!! The stock 3:42 is about as tall as you want to go for all around driving. 3:15 would be kinda sucky,,2:73 would be flat out awful!!! Good luck!!---OOOPS,,screwed up the edit!! see below!

I am obviously a Corvette noob, so don't kill me here. How does the car adjust the speedo for the gear change on its own?? Every other car I have owned(Mustangs) you have to either change the the speedo gear our reprogram depending on the year.

The VSS reads directly off the differential ring gear carrier, not the trans as on most cars. The car is not "adjusting" anything.
