I own a 2002 A4 and have questions about the column lock problem. I took the Q&A info below from another post on this site and based on this it appears I should not be affested by this problem.
Q What years are affected?
A Pre-2001 A4 cars and all MN6 or MN12(Z06) cars.
I have the service manuals for 2002 and do not see any reference to any type of locking device in the steering column drawings. Many posts on this site about this problem say "just install the fix" but if it's not necessary why would I do that, and should I do it?
Does anyone have actual first hand experience with this year/transmission combination and a column lock problem? Seems like a lot of conflicting views on this. Obviously no one wants to be stranded somewhere but there must be someone that actually knows for sure the answer to my question.
The above referenced thread contains just about everything that you would want to know about the column lock issue - and actually, I don't think your '02 A4 has a column lock.
If you can turn your steering wheel with the ignition off and the key out, then you have nothing to worry about.
Here are the years and transmissions that can/will be affected by the column lock.
* Model year 1997-2000 Corvettes with automatic transmissions in the United States, Canada, and Mexico;
* Model year 1997-2004 Corvettes with automatic transmissions in Europe and export countries;
* Model year 1997-2004 Corvettes with manual transmissions in North American, European, and export countries.
Since you have a '02 A4, yours will not be affected by it, unless you bought a European/export car.
