What the OP (I also feel that way) is not whether he damaged the car or not, but what he did AFTER.

He basically saw everything then decided to run off. If he didn't see the damage it had caused, he wouldn't have sped up and past other traffic to get away.

Too bad you didn't get a look at the trucks plate. Not that it could have been proven intentional.

Do you also carry a cell phone? A quick call to 911 with that vehicle description to the local authorities might have provided better results.

It would be pointless regardless because the fact that he went to a repair shop doesn't prove anything unless they can match his damage to the OPs, and since there was no vehicle-to-vehicle contact then they obviously can't do that.

Inconsiderate? You bet. He got scared and put lives in jeopardy as he sped off through traffic. Whether or not the driver of the truck was at fault isn't the issue, but he obviously thought he was since he had to speed off after he watched the whole thing.

I got ran off the road by a Mustang early this year. I was driving on the main drag at Camp Lejeune and this Mustang pulls up next to me with his windows down. The next thing I know he steers a hard right and I had no choice but to go off the road, sliding sideways slinging grass and dirt everywhere. I didn't let off the gas and just kept going to keep the car in control and quickly got back on the road. There he was right next to me with his windows rolled up and he sped off.

I just chalked it up to being lucky that I didn't get hurt and there was no damage. I could have turned in his plate number to the MP's and he would have lost his driving privileges on base. I figured he just got an early Christmas present! haha

Had it happened 500' sooner, I would have ended up in a big, wide ditch and no doubt would have rolled my car.

Good thought, a call with the description of the truck/trailer (color, trailer), weaving through traffic (dangerously) on the highway would have brought the State Leo out there pretty damn quick. First thing they would have probably thought was "drunk driver." Too bad he didn't think of that.

To the OP, good you're not seriously injured.

Did you info from any witnesses?

You did the right thing, he was the INCONSIDERATE BAS&TA*&

In N.C., if cargo falls off your vehicle or a piece of equipment falls off your vehicle and hits another vehicle in the process, then you as the driver are at fault. If your vehicle picks up something on the roadway and throws it into another vehicle, then no one's at fault. That's the law in this state. Also, that kind of accident would not make your insurance go up in this state. Just thankful you didn't get injured by flying glass in the eyes or something. Good luck.

I think you'll find in most states that there was no fault by the other driver here. The only thing he did wrong was not stop to see if you were okay. He could have,,, but,,, Considering your jokes about hollow points and carry permits he probably did the right thing by not stopping.

Glad you're okay, and the car can be fixed.

I have my carry permit, but regardless I wouldn't have shot the guy. I may have been angry, but I am not stupid. Had I chased him and managed to get him to pull over i would just give him a piece of my mind on why he was in such a hurry that he couldn't check to see if I was ok. I did have my cell phone, but he was only one of many trucks with trailers out this weekend. The home opener for MU was today so there was alot of extra traffic today. The chance LE had of pulling over the right truck and connecting him to what happened are slim to none. My first call was to the insurance company. Unfortunately in this state my insurance rates will be affected when simple avoidance of the object would have prevented all of this. Thanks to all for the support.

If you have a carry permit and are operating legally, I am not sure why you would not have followed the guy if you felt he was at fault. Now I will say he should have made sure you were ok, but none of that was actually his fault. There is no law that says I can't run something over on the road...that I have to avoid it...and what you think is reasonable effort to avoid it, may be different for him. Maybe he did not feel safe enough swerving out of the way, or he didn't actually see it until it was too late. The REAL law breaker is the person that lost that piece of wood and did nothing about it. There IS a legal obligation to tie down and secure whatever you are carrying. I had a guy in front of me run over a huge link from a chain and it cracked my truck windshield. It pi$$ed me off, but I don't think it was his fault.

It SUCKS that it happened and unfortunately you are going to be the one that has to pay for someone's carelessnes.

Trying to chase him down and confront him may have been interesting if he also had a carry permit.
