Never did change the thermostat in my '00 in over 7 years of ownership - it always worked just fine. As for the coolant, GM recommends 5 years or 100K miles (at least it used to be that mileage requirement), whichever comes first. If your car meets either of those two requirements, time to change the coolant out.
