Default Long Tube header question (NOT tech related...)

Guys. I am SERIOUSLY on the verge of pulling these things off my car. I originally installed these with all the smog equipment and I live in the golden state (CA for the later persons) thinking that at WORST, I would get a fix-it ticket or something similar if I got caught. Well, I have been told by TWO separate people now that if you get caught with these things in CA, that it is a hefty fine (2 or 3 THOUSAND!!!) dollars AND you have to get them removed (another thousand in labor if you don't do it yourself). (What's more, one of those people told me that the Five Oh doesn't even need to have probable cause in order to check for these with their canes-with-mirrors under your car to check after pulling you over.) Seeing that I am thinking about driving my car more than once or twice a week now and I have already been messed with once by the black and white (fortunetaly not busted though - that's another story), I am on the verge of getting these removed and putting my car back to stock. Is it just me, or does all this seem a little outrageous over a simple performance part??? (I know I know, CA is a pain for emissions but come on..). Flamesuit on... I want to hear your guys opinions on this and whether you can confirm this so-called new law, especially the no-probable cause needed part (stop and go traffic + cats + mufflers really doesn't constitute a loud enough car for probable cause in my book). (it also sounds like a violation of the U.S. consitution to me!!!). I can't find anything about it on the net and basically just want some opinions before I dive into getting these things taken out. Thanks

Anthony

Your friend is absolutely correct on all counts. Not to add to paranoia but the CHP is enforcing smog laws with roiling inspection machines. They simply set up check points and get you there.

I'd move back in to the USofA...."pear"
I used to think we were part of USofA, but now with all the progress I'm having some doubt.
To OP; down here you have to play at your own risk.

I think you'll get better response if you post this on the So. Cal forum.
Someone said they use mirrors to check for catalytic converters. As long as you have cat backs, you should be ok.
I can't see them looking for the CARB label that way.

The above link is about only two of more than 30 codes they can use to get you and it gives them a wright to pull you over for emission compliance check. Most cops will never bother you if the mods are not obvious, they have much more fun going after guys with fart cans. Even if it is unlikely you would get pulled over and checked there always will be the possibility that you may and that is why I said your friend is correct on all counts. It has gotten so ridicules that here in SD they are checking your wood for nails at local fire pits, if they find a board with one it's $295 out of your pocket. Like I said play at your own risk, chances are that you will never have a problem but there is always that single time where you might.

Unfortunately the OP is correct. My brother in Northern Cali had LT's on his C5, he bought a C6, and he refuses to put headers on it because of the smog laws. But hey, that still can't be as bad as Leo's taking your blood at DWI/DUI stops, as they do in some states.

A quick scan of that link says the fine is max $250, plus whatever repairs you have to make.
If you get the LT's smogged, you should blow clean at roadside check. You then have to ask how agressive they'll get on the visual inspection.

Swap them out for some shorties. You wont get as much power with them but at least they will pass the Republic of CA emissions. Either that or move to FL. They could care less about emissions here.

You're a firefighter...that comes across that you are defending the "rights" of DUI drivers(?). You've most certainly seen the mayhem they cause on public roads.

BTW, it (in most states) requires probable cause and a search warrant for a certified LEO/phlebotomist to draw blood...

How about getting an emmissions test done privately just to see how it reads? If it passes it seems like you should be ok. But then again it is CA.

Isn't the fine for removing catalytic converters $250,000 + jail time?

Read little further and you will find $500 administrative fine and daily non compliance fines. Like I sad this is only one of many codes they can site you for. Your exhaust system up to the cats is a part of emission system and thus subject to strict control. Here is another quote that talks about federal requirement and associated fine.
Federal law makes it illegal for ANYONE to tamper with, disconnect, remove or otherwise render inoperative ANY emissions-related control device. The Environmental Protection Agency and most states have actually been rather lax about enforcing this rule on motorists, but they haven't hesitated to nail professional service facilities that have been guilty of tampering. Even so, the fines can be hefty. A violation may make you liable for up to a $2,500 fine!
Most will laugh at this and you will not find any listing of my mods on CF but that does not mean it can't happen.

You forgot the mandatory castration before your release

Not here in CA. All equipment must have a CARB #'r otherwise it is illegal. The LTs have no degrading affect on your emission output when wormed up. The reason they can't get CARB # is because they take much longer to worm up your cats and your vehicle subsequently will produce more smog in that time.

I'm "defending the rights of DUI drivers?" That's a funny statement/question.

A LEO/phlebotomist, does not register for me.

Regardless of your political affiliation, vote all this idiots out of CA and find someone new who is fiscally responsible and focuses state resources to areas that need it.

I live in AZ and I don't even have cats. Went right through emissions.

I'm scared of CA. they won't let you have a fun or personal car, and they won't let you have a gun.
