Default Patching Runflats

Hey yall, my Right Rear tire has a slow leak, and I called a tire shop to see about getting it fixed and the man there told me that runflats can't be patched. Wtf is he talking about?

There's no difference when it comes to patching tires, be they runflats or non-runflats. If the puncture is in the tread, then both should be able to be fixed. If the puncture is in the sidewall or edge of the tread, then neither can be fixed. That tire store guy was trying to sell you a new tire. Go find another tire store.

I've had runflats patched numerous times with punctures in the treads. These tires have lasted many more miles with no problems. Some shops might not want to work with a large size runflat tire, they are more difficult to mount. Find another shop, Discount tire has made repairs for me on my runflats.

I've called 4 different shops in the local area, and none of them will work on it. I'll have to try and find a Discount Tire, see what they can do for me

Yes, Discount Tire has plugged/patched a puncture in one of my runflats, and what's even better, they didn't even charge me for the repair. That's part of their customer service policy.

The tire guy is wrong, unless the puncture is very close to or in the sidewall or is just a huge puncture. The recommended repair method is the plug and patch and if done properly, the tire will be good for many more miles.

Sorry, but that makes no sense to me, if they won't fix runflats but will fix non-runflats. I think it's more an excuse to sell a new, higher-priced tire to an unknowledgeable buyer.

This is correct. And our shop (Disc Tire) does not charge for the repair regardless of where the tires were bought. 14 year tire store manager.

Proper tire repair:

Even if repaired properly you do lose the speed rating, but I think that is more for the lawyers...most any tire shop should be able to do this.

When I got a nail in mine it was too close to the sidewall and they wouldn't fix it.

I have patched my Goodyear RFs twice with a Monkey repair kit purchased at the local car parts store for $5 and there is still material for several more fixes. I drive as fast a 80 mph on the freeway and have not had any problems and there is no leakage.

He's full of crap.

Patching them is the ONLY way to repair them. You can't put a plug in one.

Had my GY Eagle F1 left rear RF patched and it was fine for 10 thou miles (until I got new tires all around). Just didn't hold air quite as well as the other 3 (had to add couple lbs of air about every 2 thou miles, no biggy). America's Tire did it and the guy said RFs should be both plugged and patched (not just one or the other) and should only be done once on a tire (don't know if that's true). Was also told with a patched RF, it wasn't advisable to track the car (not sure if that's true either but didn't take the chance).

Saw a post here a while back that said if you plug one, it creates air in between the layers or something (don't recall) so the post above mine may be speaking to that, maybe that's why my RF lost a bit of air over time. But then Donkey's post looks pretty informative on the topic too (thanks for including the pic Donkey, I'll put it in my Vette file for future reference).
