Default Check Engine Light Came On!

My check engine light just recently came on but the dash isnt lighting up with codes and commands. The book says it's an emissions problem but I don't feel like getting raped at the stealership unless I have to. The oil life is at 14% so could that be it? And the other day I put 91 octane in it at a shi**y off brand station. They didn't have 93 and I was almost on E so could that be it? Hopefully someone can help.

Dont recall if teh check engine comes on when its due oil change I do recall the DIC displaying the change oil message, but that very well could be it. does the light go out when you reset the message?

I doubt the oil life at 14% has anything to do with the check engine light, mine is at 12% right now (changing oil this weekend) and i have no check engine light...

What's the code? check your gas cap, try another tank of fuel from another gas station see if the issue persists...

Turn key off. Take off gas cap. Put it back on right and tight. Start and run car for a few minutes and see if light goes off.

It's not the oil. I changed my oil and didn't reset it, and it got to where it was telling me "change oil now" but no check engine light came on. (I have since reset it)
My check engine light came on about 2 weeks ago though, it was an emissions thing. I can't remember the exact code, but it was something like P4220. Not a huge biggie, but I'll be looking into fixing it before too long.

Have you been able to pull any codes from the PCM on the DIC?

If so let us know the number of the codes so we can steer you in the right direction.

Thanks,Matt

Gas caps are responsible for check engine lights a lot of times. Just had it happen in the wife's car. Hope it's something that simple.

if it is bad gas, it could cause the knock sensor to be going off. will this cause a check engine light?

When I first got my car, there was one night under heavy acceleration when my car went into reduced power and all sorts of stuff came up on the DIC, service active handling, check ABS and something else, I forget.

I cleared the codes and the car ran fine for a while.

Another day and under acceleration, same thing, car powers down and everything lights up. I got on here and was told to check my grounds and my battery terminal connections. Since I have cleaned my battery terminal connections and all the grounds on the car, I have not had a single CEL come on again, all the clean connections fixed it.

Cheap to do/free, and easy to check your battery connections and the grounds.

What's weird is the DIC isn't lighting up and telling a code. The light is just on. I'll check out the gas cap thing and put fresh gas and see what happens. Thanks for the help so far and I'll keep you posted.

Do you know how to check the codes in the DIC?

The code will not just pop up, you have to "ask" for it.

There is also a way to turn the CEL off as well.

Here is how to pull codes on the DIC: This will help us

How to Pull Codes:
1. Turn your key to the "ON" position, but do not start the engine.
2. Clear any present messages by pressing the RESET button.
3. Hold the OPTIONS button down, and press the FUEL button 4 times. (This will get you into the "codes" section of the DIC.
4. The computer will automatically display all the codes your car has created. It will cycle through each code every 3 seconds. (Have a pen and paper handy to write down the codes)

Note: Any code that ends in an "H" is a history code (something that has occurred in the past, but is not reporting as an error currently.)

5. Once the computer has finished going through all of its codes, press RESET to enter Manual Configuration mode. It should start with a module and show "NO CODES" or "# Codes."
6. To optionally reset codes once in manual mode, press and hold RESET until is displays "NO CODES."
7. Press OPTIONS to go into the next module (ie, from PCM, or Powertrain Control Module, to TCS, or Traction Control System.)
8. Repeat Step 6 until you have reset all the codes in all the computer modules.

Note: Only reset the codes if you want to- it is not necessary to reset them every time you pull the codes.

9. When finished, simply take your key out of the ignition.

Thanks,Matt

Ok, gas cap was not the problem. did what was said to do, nothing after 10mns of idling. I gave her a couple good revs and she was blowing out a little smoke and then when it went back to idle, I could see the exhaust like how it is in the winter. Don't know if thats bad. But I got the codes, they are as followed:

10-PCM: P0461 H, P1416 H C, P1431 H

A0-LDCM: B2252 H, B2282 H, B2284 H, B2264 H, U1064 H

A1-RDCM: B2237 H, B2239 H, B2253 H, B2203 H, B2283 H, B2285 H, B2263 H, B2205 H, U1064 H

A6-SCM: B2187 H, B0851 H, B2605 H, B2606 H

That is all the codes the DIC gave me. Hopefully someone can make sense of this and let me know what the problem is.

The "H" indicates those are all history codes and not current "C" codes.

Here is a site that will break down what those history codes mean though...

Ok then, so every code ended in an H except, 10-PCM: P1416 H C, which ends in an H and a C. P1416 is AIR System Bank 2. Does the C indicate that that is the problem?

Yes the check valve behind the intake manifold is stuck and not allowing fresh air to be pumped into the exhaust stream to assist the CATs in lighting up faster. It isn't an uncommon problem...

Please do a search on the code and you'll get some great repair info!
