Default Ghost in the machine?

My C5 1999 coupe has only 21K miles, but is giving a flurry of false warnings in the Driver Information Center. Says Low Fuel, Check Tire Pressure, Service Engine Soon, Low Power, turns off stereo, windows won't roll down, service active handling, etc., etc. When I turn off the engine and restart, it returns to normal operation. Goes thru the same routine more and more frequently, now every few minutes. Plenty of fuel, not overheating, nothing mechanically wrong. Any ideas what's causing this massive set of false readings?

Get your battery checked. Low battery voltage can cause these kinds of random problems. And make sure your battery terminals are clean and not corroded.

The car starts fine and no indications of low battery. Are they that sensitive?

Are they that sensitive? The car starts just fine, and doesn't seem to have a low battery.

Alright, will give that a try. The battery has no corrosion at all, clean as new. Will put a charger on it and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion. TC

Check your grounds at the rear of the passengers side head. And as mentioned, Give the battery a load test to see if it's shot.

Make sure that the battery has not had a leaking battery side terminal that might of leaked before you bought it. The corrosion might be down in the wiring harrness and or the PCM itself.

Checked for leaks, no corrosion, made sure battery cables are tight to terminals. Connected 12-volt charger at 6-amp setting and charger indicates charging at about 2-1/2 amps. Will leave connected for awhile to see if charger reading changes. Thanks for the advice. TC

Well, had mixed results. After charging the battery for more than an hour, the DIC read 13.9 volts but as I drove more it decreased to about 13.6 volts. Did the error message thing again, so took it in for a new battery. Learned that the existing battery was the smaller of two size options so bought the larger size and installed. Drove for about 1-1/2 hours with no incidents but started doing it again. Turned off everything I could (AC, stereo, unplugged cell phone charger, etc.) and still had problems. Voltage varied from 14.1 volts down to 13.7 volts, depending on car speed and traffic.

So, I thought the new battery solved the problem but didn't. Guess I'm heading for the Chevy garage later this week, unless you have some more ideas for me.

Check out this thread here:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...cs-inside.html

I have been having the same problems as you... and it happened a couple of times today on my trip from Orlando to Kissimmee and back. When I got back I could not get my drivers window up at all. I tried what the above thread was talking about (actually just jiggled the wires) and it worked immediately.

Good Luck.

Wow, Jedi Master.
The link you gave me describes exactly the same problems I've been happening, and makes perfect sense. When I made my appointment at the Chevy garage for next Thursday, the service rep was guessing that the problem was likely due to something causing communication problems in the system (but obviously hadn't opened up anything yet). The connector with the loose pinouts would explain why the problem is intermittent and I would have never figured this out on my own. Also wonder if the service department would have been able to figure it out without lots of hours of digging around, unless they heard of this before. I'll definitely look at the connector tomorrow and see if this looks like the problem. Thanks for sharing! Tim Christensen

Couldn't access the wires without pulling the boot open and didn't have time for that. But it seems like the problem is in the passenger side connector, not the driver side like the link said - but given two choices at least it looks like this connector is the culprit. Will post the final resolution after I know what solves this. TC

Glad to hear it is most likely a simple fix. I would be crapping myself worried about an expensive ECM fix or something like that. Who woulda thunk a dumb little connector can cause such mischief!
