I bought mine from Ecklers. It was around $100 but I didn't trust the $35 ones I saw on the auction.

Do you have to take them to the dealer to have them programed?

Yes, you can get one from the auction site, just get one that covers the year of your car. You can also get one from some of the major vendors or sponsor dealerships (Fichtner Chevy). Gene at gmpartshouse.com is another excellent source for parts.

If my car came with a regular key fob, can I get a passive/active key fob? It's a 2001, and I really want to find a passive fob but I'm not sure if I can get it and program it to my car.

No, you can do it using the DIC Option Section. Instructions in the Owner's Manual. Worked great for my 2004!

I think 97-99 fobs (with the a/p switch) were the same, 00 different, and 01-04 different again. Differing receivers and some other wiring... I think

Bad news: Passive fobs were only for 1997-1999.

Good News: Your tire pressure sensors only cost $40 each instead of $100 each.
