Hey... what do you guys use to jack your car up? I am considering getting a floor jack to be able to do more to my car instead of having to take it to a shop. But I don't know what jacks will work with our cars. So let me know what you use and where to get the best prices if you know.
Harbor Freight 91039 floor jacks are works of art, at least in appearance. The finish on them is incredible, especially considering the price. Now I know that what counts is the quality of the seals/rams/etc. but most posters from the forum speak well of these jacks in use. "Regular" price varies from $79-$100 but you can find coupons here and there (car, motorcycle magazines are where I got mine) allowing you to purchase for as low as $60. Buy two at that price--that's what I did--so you can do a classy job of lifting your 'Vette. Use the jacking pucks if lifting from the sides.
What about using some sort of crossmember to hit the jacking points in the front and back? I think I remember seeing someone modifying something to allow the jack to span the 2 lifting points.
I have jacking pucks... but I wasn't sure that you could lift it safely from just one puck location. Do you need 2 jacks and lift from both front / rear puck locations? Guess I am a little paranoid when it comes to lifting these cars.
I bought this twin-piston jack from Northern Tool a few years back that was on sale at the time with billet jack stands for about $180... http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...3353_200313353
The stands alone are now $70...
Great tool that weighs under 50# so it gets a lot of use. I also have a 30 year old Craftsman that still looks terrific and works like a Swiss watch... but at 75# plus it doesn't get so much use any more around the garage. The lighter the jack, the more useful you'll find it to be.
One word of caution I've been warned about is to not take the less-expensive Chinese jacks up to their limit with a load on it. If you do, they are supposedly prone to leaking. I have never had one leak on me, but then I've also never extended it to the limit either.
I have the HF jack, I was skeptical at first about a jack for $69, but it has been a good one for me. I've had it 4 years now and it's lifted everything from my Vette to my full sized pickup without a hitch. I'd like to buy a second one.
I use the Black Jack, some Walmarts have it. It is a heavy duty commercial type jack. Jacks from 3.3" to 17.72" and is a 3 ton jack with "turn handle" lock and release. I think it was $60.
