Gene @ GM Parts House and Parts Taxi sell a LS7 clutch/flywheel kit if you will that bolts right in to the car w/o problems. As far as how much power it will hold I have no idea and would also be interested. I plan on going this route once my clutch decides to go (70.5k on the clock).
Ran the ls7 clutch in my GTO...you'll need an ls2 flywheel and yes the extra weight of the clutch will rob some HP on a dyno...Held up nicely considering the extra weight not to mention the full bolt-ons + medium cam and ported fast 90 that i had on the car. 4000rpm launches and it never skipped a beat! If your not overly concerned about dyno numbers it makes a great stock replacement that will handle the occasional visit to the local drag strip if need be. As far as what its rated to, consider that it does well in the stock C6 Z06 which is a bit heavier and has 100more HP than we do.
I see what you mean. Just had some time to search some threads and it doesn’t seem like that good of deal when keeping performance in mind.
It's really a no win situation for a budget clutch. I am on week 3 of searching, and reading endlessly. There is no budget solution for the c5, it seems. The spec 3 is the only budget friendly clutch that can take the abuse of 5-6k launches. However, then you put the extra strain on the car by the clamping force of this clutch, and risk tearing out the rear. I have owned one, in a mustang, and it was horrible. Extremely heavy feel, and grabs hard. I have read the lsx cars have more success though.
I have decided to just suck it up, put the spec 3 in my car, and add the ECS brace and output shaft.
I don’t plan on doing much drag racing if any (no 1/4 track within 2.5hrs) and although I would like a bigger cam it most likely won’t end up happening. Mostly my car is for weekend fun, autox, and 3-4 track days a year. I found a OEM LS6 replacement clutch kit for $423 on a site and I was looking at the Exedy stock replacement or a Spec Stage 1.

I have a brand new LS7 clutch (full set up) if you're interested, for a bit less than the above # you quoted.
As far as going with a spec I would go a bit further up the line than just a stage 1. I have a 2+ and it feels like stock with the exception of a slightly heavier pedal. It all boils down to how much $$ you want to spend.
Not too long ago a vendor was trying to help out a customer and was selling a new in box Spec super twin for $900 and I didn't see anyone jump all over it.....now that would be a great buy.
I have the perfect solution......drive the car like a ***** and you will have no clutch problems, also no fun
mods = fun, power and maybe breakage, but fun, fun, fun
Did an ACT twin on my friend's Cobra and he loves...super soft and holds his 700hp no problem. Mine is getting done this week. I'll give you the run down afterwards!
